Anne Jenkins: Why I changed my mind about trans self-identification

In today’s Telegraph.

Or

No doubt I will now be vilified for declaring myself to be “‘gender critical”, but I am not just standing up for the rights of tens of millions of women and girls but speaking for the vast majority who are either still unaware of what has been happening to our equality laws or are too scared themselves to say anything.

The article is interesting because she is part of a family who has been lauded in the past by Stonewall. And she, herself, has campaigned for women’s rights.

Another voice of reason.

So far very little negative pushback on her actual timeline. That is good to see.

@Helleofabore

I am listening to this podcast Chopper’s Politics and I can see why she has started to speak out.

The podcast is with Frank Luntz’ and his research. What he has found is that

28% of people have stopped talking to someone because of something political they once said.

The worst were those ‘younger’ people who we get told will change the world, who think they are the wokest. Who pride themselves on being open minded and tolerant.

Over 50% of 18- 29 year olds have stopped listening to voices they have perceived have said something wrong in the past.

How tolerant is that?

Yet only 14% of over 65 year olds have that attitude.

As Frank Luntz puts it. The generation who thinks of themselves as being most tolerant is actually the least tolerant.

I think we see that in action on here, on other social media platforms.

He said that this generation is getting the idea that this is ok. And the message has come from people who are teaching them or from friends, and social media that encourages this intolerance. And they are being applauded and told that this is a good thing … when it is completely hypocritical and dangerous for society.

While I don’t agree with him that the impacts on women from trans rights is as minuscule as he believes, his poll is really interesting. He attitude to free speech, his attitude to slavery and imperialism is common sense really.

That's really pretty chilling. A v clear illustration of how cancel culture works.

As Anne Jenkin's a trustee of Fawcett Society - does anybody have any optimism that this might prompt a reconsideration?

Or is she more likely to be subject to the pressure we saw on Sonia Sodha given the stance of the interim CEO?

Felicia Willow - interim CEO of Fawcett Society: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4234244-Fawcett-Society (NB: her account is currently suspended - I've no idea when this happened or why.)

The grown ups are entering the room.

The grown ups are entering the room.
I hope so.

In my usual pessimistic way, we had grown-ups who anticipated all of these problems when they spoke up during the debates about the GRA. They were talked down and over so here we are.

Will the grown-ups prevail this time?

Anyone who has any examples of how they have been treated that can be used as evidence should be sending them to Baroness Nichol (on her HoL email). They need our support.

It is frustrating that much is underhand but any concrete examples that can be put together help them do their jobs.

Thank you for posting the letter from Baroness Deech. She has been a campaigner on academic freedom for a long time - here is a leading speech from a few years ago in the Lords that has useful reference to the laws governing universities and freedom of expression more widely. www.theyworkforyou.com/lords/?id=2015-11-26a.833.4 May be of interest to readers here.

Another bit of background: Anne Jenkin is married to Bernard Jenkin MP, who chairs the important Liaison Committee which comprises the chairs of all the select committees; it has oversight of select committees and questions the Prime Minister in person a few times a year.

Interesting then that Baroness Deech mentions a select committee to consider the implications for women's spaces and sport. The Commons select committee on women and equality has been doing an inquiry into gender recognition act but she may have been thinking the Lords could set up a special inquiry committee of its own or use an existing Lords one if there is one suitable.
