Norway women’s volleyball team fined because they wore shorts and not bikini bottoms

Cos it’s the rules Hmm

Wearing shorts doesn’t stop the women from playing the sport. Men teams don’t wear little tiny budgie smugglers so why do women have to wear bikini bottoms

I have no hope really as all the comments on it on that page were mainly from men saying how rules are rules and it’s good they were fined. They just want to perv on the women

Women can’t win! I honestly think complaining about what women do should be it’s own Olympic sport so men could all just get it out every 4 years and leave us alone.

Megasausagehead · 20/07/2021 15:50

Oh, weird. Not sure why this thread cannot mention the topic most covered on sex and gender. But ok.

UtopiaPlanitia · 20/07/2021 16:00

Good on the Norwegian women’s team!! I 100% support them in wearing sports gear that makes them feel more comfortable and less on show.

I wonder if we can write to the relevant sporting body in support of the team’s request for more appropriate clothing and to ask that the fine be removed?

NiceGerbil · 20/07/2021 16:03

@DingDongDenny

Or they could all stop waxing their bikini lines, that'll stop the men from perving
I think that's unlikely tbh.
NiceGerbil · 20/07/2021 16:03

I mean that it would stop men watching.

NCwhatsmynameagain · 20/07/2021 16:13

Disgusting. Can’t help controlling what women wear to within an inch of their lives

heatwavehell · 20/07/2021 16:18

Regardless of the sexual connotations of the briefs vs shorts, I don't see why a sporting body could rule on the matter unless it gave a benefit by wearing shorts.
it isn't a lovely leg competition, it is a sport. So why rule on what are basically undergarments?
E.g. in swimming you can't wear a full body suit in case it makes you faster, but you could wear a onepiece beach swimsuit if you wanted. But most competitive swimmers will wear a knee suit. It is personal choice up to the point where a competitive advantage is gained (e.g. governing body prohibiting sharksuit).
Personally I hate the bum hanging out look in any context, and would turn over the olympics if the TV were showing women's volleyball with a lot of buttocks.

NiceGerbil · 20/07/2021 17:02

Because the women's clothes have been shrinking in the wash for years. While many of the men's styles have done the opposite.

There are many reasons for the shrinkage. Without rules they might all but disappear.

NiceGerbil · 20/07/2021 17:06

'Personally I hate the bum hanging out look in any context, and would turn over the olympics if the TV were showing women's volleyball with a lot of buttocks.'

If loads of people do that or start to do it, it will result in a massive drop in the viewing of a host of women's competition which is a rubbish result.

I want to see women doing amazing things in sport etc. I find things like the gymnastics, high jump, pole vault and many more really awesome and inspiring. I watch with the family.

Even if it does mean those particularly yikes shots often when the gymnasts do those handstands with their legs in the splits.

DdraigGoch · 20/07/2021 18:04

Perhaps the Norwegian women's team needs to sign up an intact TW.

markmichelle · 20/07/2021 18:28

@Megasausagehead

The IHF should be called out for womanising. Rules indeed.

I'd take the fine.

The Norwegian Team has said they will pay the fine, $150 each player.
Warmduscher · 20/07/2021 18:32

I saw the photo of them when they previously wore the bikini bottoms. They were right up their arse crack. I can’t see how they could possibly be comfortable to play sport in.

NiceGerbil · 20/07/2021 19:07

The other thing which is obvious generally is that all of this turns a lot of focus- whether pervy, judgemental, moments of viewers being a bit crikey, and conversations like this on women's bodies and clothes. Often more than their sporting achievements, athleticism etc.

In these sort of news stories and the discussions that follow.

And for viewers.

I mentioned I enjoy the gymnastics but it's hard to focus when you'd be hard pushed not to have interruptions from your brain thinking
OMG it can't be comfy to have your leotard up your bum like that
Essentially waxing is compulsory for all of them like it or not
Yikes that is a really intimate view of her groin
What do they do if a really talented gymnast doesn't have such. Um. Neat tuckaway... parts.
God imagine if they missed some pubes or had a terrible wardrobe malfunction, there would be close up photos and vile comments everywhere.
That sort of thing.

As usual with this sort of thing it's not about the individual competitors.

It's about the variety of expectations, norms, pressures, team uniforms, and in some cases potential of more sponsorship etc that drive it in the first place.

The fact that so many athletes are constantly pulling their pants out of their backside - I mean I can't imagine that's not annoying etc.

For the competitors as well. They are well used to having their bodies looked at, scrutinised etc. I don't think, in an awful lot of events etc, you can get to that level and not grow immune to having people focussed on your body an awful lot. Medicals, physios, trainers, changing in communal things and on and on.

This is a societal issue. For me. Maybe a culture in sport issue.

Persille · 20/07/2021 19:19

Completely ridiculous. All the more so when men are allowed to wear shorts twice the length of what the Norwegian team were fined for wearing.

Meanwhile, a female paralympian was shamed by an (English Championships; not Olympics) official for competing in sportswear which the official thought was too short.

www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jul/19/paralympian-olivia-breen-dismayed-after-being-told-sprint-briefs-too-short

terrywynne · 20/07/2021 19:22

Good on the Norwegian Handball Federation for agreeing to pay the fines for the players and for saying they will table a motion to get the rule changed. But seriously what the hell. You not need to wear a bikini to play beach handball, and according to the other thread beach volleyball already made changes so playerrs have choices - handball don't really have any excuse.

SummerSaladsAreBack · 20/07/2021 19:25

Good for the Norwegian team! I saw the photos of the team wearing their shorts and they looked smart and appropriate. Bikini bottoms not so much!

ArabellaScott · 20/07/2021 19:50

Gross and sexist, yep .

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/07/2021 22:58

If small briefs are required for the sport, then all participants of the sport should be wearing them - regardless of sex.

Oh.....what's that you say, make participants? They arent essential?

Ok. Give us your fucking shorts then.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/07/2021 22:59

male not make

NiceGerbil · 21/07/2021 02:22

In the 70s men's shorts for sport were waay skimpy.

Since then their sports gear has slowly covered more while women's has slowly covered less.

Wh0Knew · 21/07/2021 03:06

One of the reasons the team gave for not feeling comfortable in the bikini briefs is that it isn’t practical or comfortable when they are menstruating - the uniform should be changed for that alone.

NiceGerbil · 21/07/2021 03:19

I have thought that about s lot of sports gear.

Remember the Chinese swimmer who won and in the post win interview said and I'm on my period. She was fab.

We're supposed to pretend these things don't exist really.
