Cambridge book event

There may have been a thread already about this and I've missed it, but is anyone on here going to the event in Cambridge this Saturday? It's organised by two Cambridge women's groups and features Helen Joyce reading from her recently published book, also Kathleen Stock, Julie Bindel and Jane Clare Jones. I'm quite excited about a real life event happening - the last one I signed up to attend was cancelled as it was just before the lockdown first began in 2020

That's actually quite tempting, though I have a shit-ton going on at the moment and probably won't make it.

Is it an all day thing, and where is it exactly?

I would go - but my travel arrangements are fragile and I can't go through that faffing about with the late reveal of the venue again that we've had to use for previous in-person events.

Sold out now anyway.
I wonder how big the venue is.

And it's just insane that you have to bring ID to match your ticket, and that 'The details of the venue will be released on the day of the event'. We know why that is, don't we? Aggression and harassment from those who disagree. This is supposed to be a democracy, and yet the organisers of a perfectly legal meeting have to keep the location quiet until a few hours beforehand.

It is absolutely mad that we have to go through all this cloak and dagger stuff - I decided to go as I'm in the area by chance that weekend, looking forward to hearing Helen and Kathleen especially. I think the organisers hope to at least record the meeting and put it online at a later date

I realise that I sounded negative - I'm just too aware of how easy it is to hit deadspots for your phone operator in parts of London and the late notification made me quite jittery.

All that said, there's nothing quite like being in a sizeable audience of people who are there to hear the presentations and chat to each other.

American please do report back for us all. Enjoy.

ShagMeRiggins · 19/07/2021 21:31

Gah, sold out. I’d have been there in a heartbeat.

ACambsWoman · 19/07/2021 21:59

As far as I'm aware the event is not being videoed, it is too expensive to hire somebody that could record/video the evening and via phone would probably give poor vision and/or sound quality, though we may try this.

Hopefully the necessity for cloak and dagger will be worth it.

I hope it goes well and that the anti-free-speech, women-bullying wokesters stay well away.

Looking forward to your review Op. I find it staggering that the cancel brigade think they are in the majority when IRL, events such as this will be an automatic sell out. A quality line up will always trump emotional drivel

AmericanSlang · 20/07/2021 09:02

I'm looking forward to the event & hopefully will report back, can understand why it isn't possible for it to be recorded. Soz if I sounded facetious on "cloak and dagger", I appreciate the need for such measures after seeing aggressive protesting at previous events (eg Brighton, Bristol) and there is already hyperbole and falsehood swirling around Helen Joyce's book, with accusations of anti semitism and having blood on her hands
