Creationism and genderism

So I saw this on Maya Forstater's Twitter feed today: mobile.twitter.com/MForstater/status/1415237869808111616

It reminded me of something I've been thinking about lately.

Years ago, I used to read a lot of atheist-y, science-y blogs/forums. Every so often, you'd get someone who was an evangelical Christian and/or Creationist turn up to spread the good news.

Almost every time, they had the exact same things to say. The same arguments, the same mantras, as if learnt and repeated by rote, rather than understanding.

Depending on the place/time/frequency, this would either get a response of carefully criticising the same old arguments yet again, or a round of eye-rolling, before the would-be missionary retreated.

It strikes me that reading FWR is basically the same. Every so often a new TRA turns up with the exact same by-rote arguments and mantras. They'll post the same old stuff, FWR regulars will respond with critique, exasperation or both. Then eventually the TRA will get bored of repeating themselves and disappear.

There's at least one of these threads going on right now - the same nonsense retreaded once more.

Helen Joyce's comparison of the Forstater case with the Scopes Monkey Trial just struck me that there's more than one similarity between genderists and creationists.

It being a new religion forming is the only thing I enjoy about it. It is very interesting to watch.

Everything else about it is making life worse for women.

many evangelical Christians who some of you are so scathing about are campaigning tirelessly against the TWAW mantra. You don't have to agree on everything but know that you have allies where you might not always expect it.

True, but the type of 'Christian' who will abuse randoms on the internet for believing dinosaurs existed is a far cry from even most Evangelicals.

I think it's fine to point out the similarities in cults, even if members of one cult agree the other cult is crazy.

Personally I'd put Genderists right next to anti-vaxers in the intersection of pseudoscience and quackery.

Yes, its like groundhog day isent it.

Secondbellini · 14/07/2021 18:33

There are, from my personal perspective, positives and negatives about Evangelical Christian beliefs. I don’t expect everyone to agree on everything.

It is still the case that genderist ideology has mostly been developed in countries that were traditionally mostly Protestant and are now usually Post-Protestant. That is heavily reflected in genderism and identity politics.

@NonnyMouse1337

They think humans, unlike animals, have an inner essence they call gender identity and that this soul is what makes us humans.

I think some of the really nutty ones think animals have gender identities too. There's been calls to not assume animals are merely male/female. 🙄

Oh God, really? We are doomed.

All animals or just reasonably sentient ones? Horses or cats maybe. What about mosquitoes?

Anything, I think. 🤔

I'm sure I remember a non binary penguin.

I tend to avoid any religious connotations and call TWAS flat-earthers The people who say they believe the earth is flat know very well that it isn't but still insist that it is. Difference is they don't expect the rest of humanity to believe it too and call in the mob when they don't....

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/07/2021 20:21

There's a documentary on Netflix called 'Behind the Curve'. It's worth a watch, there were some very striking parallels between flat earthers and genderists.

@InspiralCoalescenceRingdown @theThreeofWeevils
Honestly I not an experienced poster on these forums - I have stumbled into a subfourm - I didn't even realise there were sub-forums - I just click "refresh" on the £Trending Now" section top right if I see a word that gets my attention - creationism did - I'm a physicist, atheist, teacher - with a lightly humorous interest in spreading the gospel of science so I'm up for a bit of banter about creationism - that is all. Increasingly, I think, in an age of conspiracy theories and pseudoscience communicating scientific ideas by talking at the level of your audience is so important - I'd avoid using terms and acronyms that might exclude people if I want to reach out and engage with people - even those standing just outside the fence enclosing people with an interest or some knowledge in a particular topic - you never who might get drawn in.

...and that was all.

I only came to MN to post one thing but it's proving to be quite an education - I'm kinda gripped by the sweet and sour of beautiful insights and vitriol. ;-)

@larkstar

You've used abbreviations without explaining them. What is FWR and TRA? Who are these people - Helen, Maya? What is your point?
Please check the board title. All these acronyms and names are familiar to people who regularly use this board.
