Oxfam advert for a job - do you know your intersectional feminism?

First thing they want to know is if you have knowledge of anti-racism, trans-inclusion and intersectional feminism. No mention of supporting gay men, lesbians (very important in some of the parts of the world they work in I would have thought), nor age discrimination (the very old and very young again I would imagine disproportionately suffer in the the regions where Oxfam are active), nor disability. Presumably they are also not too keen on supporting women who have no time for intersectional feminism. They also don't seem to be interested in supporting those who suffer for their beliefs when many conflicts are religious.

Oxfam are no longer a charity in any sense that I understand.

Since when did intersectional feminism become a bad thing?

Since the phrase began to be misused.

Many people now use it to mean that feminists are being ‘exclusive’ when they campaign for women’s rights.

Oxfam also have form and recently ran a training course that argued that white women (all white women, every where in the world) weaponise rape.

This was after Oxfam covered up the sexual exploitation of earthquake victims by senior (white) Oxfam male staff.

In this ad the role of ‘intersectional’ is to cancel out ‘feminism’.

Since when did intersectional feminism become a bad thing?

Since it started being used (exploited) by middle aged white males

Enough4me · 14/07/2021 20:40

It is possible to complain on Oxfams website. I did following the staff questionnaire, which was racist against white staff.

TofuDelights · 14/07/2021 21:27

I'd love to rock up to that interview and ask why men weren't being asked to be more intersectional.

Since when did intersectional feminism become a bad thing? Apart from the ad itself. If we remove intersectionality you're basically left with white hetero non-disabled women. Which maybe appeals to most Mnetters but why is it in and of itself a bad thing? And again what is wrong with anti-racism? I've worked with many young WoC and many of them didn't consider themselves feminists. I found it quite disappointing at first but when you see threads like this and realise this is how 'feminists' think it totally makes sense.

As a disabled woman I find this comment quite offensive to be honest. Why do you assume that the default of feminism is "white hetero non-disabled women"?

The commonality I have with other women and girls is our femaleness -- that is all. The goal of feminism should be to uphold the rights of women and girls. If anything, as a disabled woman, I'm more likely to be affected by issues such as mixed sex wards and no choice of sex WRT carer provision than the average able bodied woman. These issues affect ALL women and those of us less able are grateful to the women who can make a public stand.

I might hope that feminist conferences or gatherings would consider accessibility issues like accessible venues, toilets and communication needs but other than that why should I expect that feminists spend all their time doing disability rights activism over and above feminist actions? That's what the disability rights movement is for.

Feminists should not be expected to provide a "mothering role" to every other minority group. It's perfectly okay for feminists to focus on women (yes all of us, disabled/abled, black/white, WC or MC). While this intersectionality trend might have started out with good intentions the current cult works well to curtail what feminists can do, particularly where the demand is to centre the wishes and commands of males.

Also it seems strange to me that you would elide the great influence of lesbians and women of colour in the feminist movement with this odd idea that feminists are only white or straight - if anything it is WOC and lesbians who have led the way.

Oxfam covered up/ didn't act on sexual abuse of girls by those who were supposed to be helped.

That was a few years back.

They're shit.

Plenty more if you Google.

They were ensuring their employers could bring who they are to work and were dismantling powers structures such as safeguarding that might prevent that happening.

Indeed Tibtom.

I work at a captured charity and they talk about lot about bringing your whole self to work. Except if you disagree with genderism.

Clymene · 15/07/2021 09:45

It is against the law to discriminate against someone because of:
• age
• disability
• gender reassignment
• marriage and civil partnership
• pregnancy and maternity
• race
• religion or belief
• sex
• sexual orientation

Aren't those the things an inclusion person should be focused on? Or am I missing something?

merrymouse · 15/07/2021 09:52

Is that like how football fans without tickets brought their whole selves to Wembley and identified as people with tickets? Or does this ‘bring your whole self’ idea have limited application?

Keepemguessing · 15/07/2021 10:04

Or does this ‘bring your whole self’ idea have limited application?

Bingo! They want whole selves to nod on approvingly to gender nonsense.

Intersectional anything just makes you focus on difference. You don't really include people. No-one is ever fully human. My feminism includes all women by default. You only need intersectionalism if your feminism does not. I whole heartily think intersectional feminism, oppression Olympics, CRT, and all the other nonsense we've imported from the US and to some extent from France, is the main reason why we're here and why we're going backwards for the first time in my life. I loath intersectional feminism. Whilst I don't respect the thought system I do however respect other people's right to hold those ideas. I just wish the reverse were true.

Feminism includes all women regardless of race, disability, age etc. Intersectional feminism includes all of the above plus men. Ergo it isn’t feminism.
