How to suss out other GC people in work

I work in an organisation that is SWalled up the wazooo. I want to find other people in work who hold gender critical views, but not sure the best way to go about this. How do I do this safely? Thinking I might ask if they have any pets, like clownfish.

It's a difficult one. My workplace is not woke or probably even aware of the debate. I do find it difficult in my personal life though.

I started a conversation with someone I thought would understand the GC angle but got my fingers burnt and have generally kept quiet ever since, even with some close friends. It's mostly fear of the disappointment of finding they aren't who I thought they were.

Harry Potter mug/t-shirt/pen as appropriate to workplace. You might just be being retro, but also clearly non-woke.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/07/2021 14:20

Yes, good call.

[quote Dimpsey]I'm still working from home and as my son has left home I took over his bedroom. We were all required to attend some LGBTQ++ training and I made sure that I stuck a poster up behind my head with the saying 'Eppur si muove' on it.

I'm a bit cowardly so it may have been a bit too subtle for some but I live in hope that when we get back to the office that I may find a few allies.

I hadn't heard of that phrase before, thanks Dimpsey, that's a nice subtle on.

WallaceinAnderland · 14/07/2021 16:21

When someone at work hands you something, instead of saying thank you say 'Blessed be the fruit' and if they reply 'Under his eye' you are good to go. If they say 'Eh?' just cover up with 'Better have some fruit' and take a bite of your apple.

I dunno - I suspect my copybook was marked when I was asked to rainbow-ise the company website for S’wall a couple of years back.

I proposed they complete one of my (very) long business plan proposal forms (including costs, audiences, outcomes and revenue) and also do one for IWD, Women in engineering day, etc etc etc. I did offer to do a red logo for 1st dec. This year the MD suggested we rainbow up the logo. I said the same to her.

Funnily enough they never did fill out the proposal form... I know they will one day but I’m long enough on the tooth to know a good business argument when I see one.

RadandMad · 14/07/2021 16:52

I'm struggling to associate The Handmaid's Tale with GC views since Atwood is a trans ally.

InvisibleDragon · 14/07/2021 17:04

Tbh everyone I have spoken too about this has either agreed totally or at least been sympathetic.

My boss asked me if I "self identity as a terf" which I took to be a good sign Grin

toffeebutterpopcorn · 14/07/2021 17:05

My sister SIL tells any and everyone who will listen that she is one too. She is very proud of the fact! She is also a nurse.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 14/07/2021 17:07

Jess de Wahls patches on clothes, or maybe some suffragette jewellery from www.veeaccessories.com/ ?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 14/07/2021 17:08

Oh yes - I love her ‘heretic’ patches. But as I said, I work on woke central and don’t want to be in the news for mass murder.

KohlaParasanda · 14/07/2021 17:08

I'm in a public facing role and anything that draws attention to my appearance or my personal beliefs in front of the clientèle would be inappropriate. But I plan to switch my official lanyard for a green, white and green one next week as a signal of support for Marion Millar and keep it for the Olympics. Subtle enough not to be noticed unless you know what you're looking at.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 14/07/2021 17:10

What about the flowers? Subtle enough?

Leafstamp · 14/07/2021 17:10

I love this thread. I'm self employed, but have managed to spoken to one of my (male) clients about it and he is totally GC!

I basically started the conversation on the day of the Maya case - small talk saying that I was eagerly awaiting the outcome. The fact that it then trended on Twitter, hit BBC news etc showed that this wasn't a fringe feminist issue but something relevant to all.

I think anything current affairs wise is a good opener... "did you see in the news...." and then you can gauge from their response?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 14/07/2021 17:10

I want one of those lanyards! Where can I get one?

I also have an annoying habit of wearing green trousers and a white top with my lovely lavender jacket. My running outfit is similar. I just can’t help myself.

KohlaParasanda · 14/07/2021 17:27

toffeebutterpopcorn, my lanyard will be hand-braided from narrow haberdashery ribbon in green, white and purple. I wonder if the woman who owns the craft supplies shop will notice what I'm buying.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 14/07/2021 17:28

Haha - is it like when you see on tv police shows and the baddies are buying peroxide and fertiliser to make bombs?

KohlaParasanda · 14/07/2021 17:31

TatoAndBeans · 14/07/2021 17:34

Not currently working, but socially I like to casually drop in my love for JK Rowling or (among arty people) Rachel Ara and Jess de Wahls.

Mibbiesaye · 14/07/2021 17:37

One of my colleagues added 'Women's rights are human rights' to her email signature. That's one way of doing it!

Flippantfair · 14/07/2021 17:40

Great thread!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 14/07/2021 17:42

I have a suffragette pin on my lanyard- not a peep out of anyone (but then my work isn’t very wine thank goodness!)

JustcameoutGC · 14/07/2021 18:00

@Mibbiesaye any jobs going in your gaff. I think I would fit right in.

I can see some adulthumanfemale merchandise in my future.

Pinnerbrat · 14/07/2021 19:41

I attend work meetings with Adult Human Female or Identifies as a Sword pens. It gives me a thrill brandishing them and colleagues not knowing what they say (sad I know).
Re. allies, my HE workplace brings moments where we need to talk about balancing rights, and I'm very matter of fact and reasonable about the 9 protected characteristics like sex and disability which we often overlook because of the Uni's focus on LGBT stuff... I'm very nice and professional about it but talk about it as of course understood by us all, no rights trump others as we all know, etc. Plus I always mention female students, trauma experiences, and use 'sex' and 'women's very deliberately. And joyously, gradually people have emerged as quite clear that they dont buy it including much younger staff. Even my pronouned manager who is ostensibly very woke said staff were just trying to be 'down with the kids' re. trans issues... its wonderful when you realize the vast majority of people are either not interested or not on board, and are simply bullied by a minority. TAs would be horrified to discover what so many people really think Smile It warms my heart. So remember even if it's too difficult to find them, like-minded people will be all around you.
