people are allowed to identify as the opposite sex when having their crimes recorded.

this means that the statistics are not accurate for sex of the perpatrators, as some people are recording their gender in preference.

for example, most sex crimes are committed by men, but if some of those men are transwomen or are people who want to identify as women as thye think they might get an easier time of it in a womens prison, then the number of crimes attributed to women would increase.

this might have an effect on policy or funding.
