Does anyone know the name of the judge who categorised terf as hate speech? A colleague was called this in a meeting by a manager from another section of our organisation. She is very concerned about this (as am I!), and was wondering what the legal position on this is, especially in light of the Maya ruling. Unfortunately the union are not being very helpful at all in terms of advice.

Was it in the Miranda Yardley case?

@TrainedByCats I can't remember for the life of me!

You may be thinking of Mr Justice Julian Knowles (sorry if I don’t have his title right; am American), who said in the Harry Miller case:

"I have become familiar with term TERF. It is a derogatory term used by those who seek to deplatform those who hold different views".

She was called a terf by a manager in a meeting? Shock

I don't know about judges, but it was acknowledged as a slur in that meeting with the Twitter bigwig and some female politicians among others, if I remember right - I'm sure someone else can help fill in the gaps in my memory! (There are video clips of it out there somewhere.) And you can now (sometimes) get posts removed from Twitter for using it. So I would find someone using this in a work meeting extremely offensive and probably discriminatory.

I would suggest your colleague contact Sex Matters if the Union are of no use.

I seem to remember Joanna Cherry grilling a Twitter person in a commons select committee, is that the thing?
