An excellent tale of 'witches', and the group-courage of ill-informed cowards who believe they 'fight' for justice.

Malcolm Clark is brilliant. This is so true and the Scottish connection is interesting- hadn't really thought about that before, why Scotland is pushing ahead with all things trans at the expense of free speech etc. Do countries relive aspects of their history in the present.

That thread of Clark's is a thing of beauty. Wonderfully written, thoughtful and powerful.

It reminds me also of Matthew Hopkins, England's Witchfinder General.

A time of civil war, with significant cracks in the social and political fabric, Hopkins took advantage to make a fortune trying and testing witches outside of the formal judicial process. He too was young, in his mid twenties.

A great thread - the connection today is clear to see, particularly when Scottish women are prosecuted for posting pictures of ribbons, but threats of violence and rape to women by anonymous and cowardly internet trolls are absolutely fine.

Another Scotsman who gets it:

I believe there is a sort of 'read across' from Ireland to Scotland. Both in headlong flight from religious authoritarianism and repression. In our case Catholic , in theirs Presbyterian. Both almost pathetically desperate to be seen as a liberal poster child today - but less concerned about economic inequality than woke points?
