I can only find a DM source:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9735219/amp/YouGov-poll-suggests-just-4-cent-women-support-replacement-gendered-toilets-shared-loos.html

4% of women and 10% of men support wholly gender neutral toilets (no single sex availability).

1/3 of people support gender neutral in addition to single sex.

I'm also curious about what those who voted "None of the above" have in mind.

WhereYouLeftIt · 29/06/2021 21:44
It’s a biannual survey - I’ve got the data tables for the last release in January:

yougov.co.uk/_pubapis/v5/uk/trackers/support-for-separate-toilets-for-men-and-women-and-gender-neutral-toilets-in-public-spaces/download/
That's an interesting spreadsheet Ekofisk!

They've sliced it up so many ways, I was particularly interested in the split by political party. The number in brackets is 'Base' which I'm assuming is the number of respondents.

Conservative - 3% (699)
Labour - 10% (582)
LibDem - 11% (183)
Green - 8% (54)
SNP - 4% (69)
Plaid Cymru - 7% (15)

So even those parties who are keenest to remove single-sex spaces cannot muster more than 11% support for unisex toilets. And SNP! Time to denounce those who vote for you for their wrongthink!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 29/06/2021 22:44

Presumably the groups pushing for men invade women's spaces can frighten people enough to "agree" in public for fear of being called bigots / transphobic, as soon as people can answer in confidence, the truth is revealed.

Wallpapering · 29/06/2021 23:19

oneepisode Don’t know if that usual term you say but not seen anyone refer those who for mixed toilets as cunty people.

No I don’t agree to pissing in bushes either but given your sons circumstances he entitled to use disabled toilets, admit they are not always convenient as they weren’t for a woman who after cancer had colostomy bag, infact I know 2 women who lives planned around where women’s toilets were. I’ve also seen countless women resorted to breast feeding in women’s loo’s.

I make no apology for saying no to unisex toilets.

allmywhat · 30/06/2021 00:14

@WeirdAndPissedOff

Not surprised at all at the low results. I am surprised that the result for those who support an additional gender neutral toilet is so low. Whilst I can't see a lot of places actually implementing it (additional costs vs just changing signs or policies), to most users its surely no skin off anyone's nose to have an extra one? Or is it that those who want gender segregated toilets (rather than sex segregated) who are against it do you think?
I was thinking that too, about third spaces. I’d be quite happy with that myself.

But maybe most people are thinking “fuck that nonsense, there are no gender neutral people” and those who are aware of the trans demands movement have reached the point of wanting them to shut up and stop demanding special treatment.

Marguerite2000 · 30/06/2021 10:18

@Defaultname

I suspect that the 4% of 'women' have (fore)skin in the game.
Don't be so sure. There's probably a few women that can't wait to show how woke they are by saying 'yeah we want unisex toilets'.
flowery · 30/06/2021 10:22

The issue for me is more when organisations label toilets/changing facilities as being single sex when they are actually not.

merrymouse · 30/06/2021 10:26

I want additional unisex toilets for the same reason that I want family changing as well as single sex changing. I do not want to be sending an 8 year old opposite sex child into a toilet or changing room that I can't enter.

merrymouse · 30/06/2021 10:28

@OneEpisode

I would vote both actually. Gender neutral is useful helping a child or disabled family member who wants to aim for some privacy“normality” but actually needs their family member nearby, and same sex family member might not always be available. But that is definitely in addition to sex segregated facilities.
So I very strongly agree with OneEpisode.
Tesla73 · 30/06/2021 10:34

I wonder of HO of Sainsburys have been sent the results

Thecatonthemat · 30/06/2021 10:37

OneEpisode is there not usually a disabled toilet available which is bigger ? Perhaps some sort of curtain should be there for privacy if another person is necessary. I think most women would accept that in your circumstances you and your son could be accommodated in the women’s toilets without changing the principle of single sex, if there is no disabled toilet available. Or would you be prepared to take your son into the men’s if you think that mixed sex toilets are ok? Please note that I understand exactly the problem, but I would still say that mixed sex provision is not the answer.

Thecatonthemat · 30/06/2021 10:38

Sorry OneEpisode you clarified while I was posting.

MoonlightApple · 30/06/2021 13:23

I like what some places are doing which is turning the disabled loo into a unisex loo. It means I can take the little one and the pram in with me without having an f-ing disabled key.

I don’t think this is a good idea because (as often discussed on MN) there is a shortage of disabled loos.

I agree that public toilets are also sometimes inadequate for parents with young children - but that means we need better toilet provision, not less disabled access.

Borka · 30/06/2021 13:32

Disabled toilets should absolutely not be turned into unisex toilets - why should disabled people have to budge up any more than women should?

MoonlightApple · 30/06/2021 13:51

Merrymouse I think that is a fair point you make. I just find it so frustrating when places have loos you can’t fit a pushchair in Sad

Having a pram is not a disability.

If people weren’t so inconsiderate then those who actually have disabilities or medical conditions wouldn’t have to traps about to get a fucking key either.

MoonlightApple · 30/06/2021 15:13

Well clearly large unisex toilets and more of them is the solution for everyone then!

WhereYouLeftIt · 30/06/2021 18:04

@MoonlightApple

Well clearly large unisex toilets and more of them is the solution for everyone then!
In what way are large unisex toilets and more of them the solution for everyone?

Are they the solution for women who have been sexually assaulted and cannot bear to be so vulnerable with men just on the other side of a cubicle door (and possibly waiting for her to exit)?

Are they the solution for women who for religious reasons cannot share facilities with men not of their family?

Are they the solution for women in a nightclub who need somewhere to escape the gropey drunk fuckwit?

Are they the solution for women who don't want to use a toilet whose seat and floor are covered in piss?

Are they the solution for the 96% of women who rejected the notion in this poll?

Congressdingo · 30/06/2021 18:57

Don't be so sure. There's probably a few women that can't wait to show how woke they are by saying 'yeah we want unisex toilets
And they should start the ball rolling by using the mens every time.
If they come up with unsafe as a reason not to, then let them know that unisex is no safer, because men will still be in it.

Wallpapering · 30/06/2021 21:39

Where you propose businesses and companies get this extra space?

Have you gone through toddler faze where child refuses come in cubicle with you so you have to pee with door half open.

No way I’d let my DD have that bit of independence where can go toilet herself without me holding her hand.

Ever occur to you why women who been abused, raped or religious wouldn’t be able to use unisex loos

What about young teenage girls, you think safe for them to use unisex loos?

———-

@OneEpisode. Don’t know if you have already but have you checked with council to see if your DS meets criteria to be given key which will open most of disabled toilets.

OneEpisode · 30/06/2021 22:19

Hi Wallpapering. My problem is that DC (after bullying etc.) is vair frightened of being identified as disabled in our town. He thinks his disabilities are invisible (they are very obvious but most people Be Kind) We are working on it. Positive role models in the Paralympics might help.

I think there may be many older people (eg grandad out with his daughter) who similarly resist using facilities that they could use.

We all have some progress to make in accepting reality.
