Saw a lovely pic of Helen with Keira Bell on Twitter earlier, really made me smile. Looking forward to this event.

I hope this isn't a sign of WPUK's future direction, ie organising book launches.

The strength of WPUK as a campaign was that it make it possible for women to be part of an active campaign, and the sense that the speakers and audience were part of the same thing.

This concept that somehow one woman has captured something of importance (probably copied form FWR!) and has been published somehow merits a whole meeting and being interviewed just re-invents the hierarchies and leaves others as the passive audience.

It seems such a strange thing to be doing when there is so much political activity happening around women's sex based rights to fall back on this traditional hierararchy approach.

In fact there is so much going on they could organise monthly meetings were there was a round up of developments over the past month with commentators.

Its like they've opted out of the front line.

stumbledin · 19/06/2021 01:01

Oh my goodness! The interviewer is a Guardian employee. So either she is very brave and is prepared to lose her job or this will be a very tone down debate. ie two media feminists having an abstract conversation about something happening to other women.

Susanna Rustin has been quite openly GC on twitter for ages now.

I consider Helen Joyce one of the best commentators on this issue, she's always incredibly thorough and her writing is storming. I know that she did a lot of historical reseach to understand the origins of the gender ID movement, so I don't think that this book will just repeat what we already know.

NecessaryScene · 19/06/2021 07:28

Susanna keeps levelling up, as Maya's urged us all to do.

Previous stage was writing for the Radical Notion. And she just breached ex-Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger's Twitter reply block to school him on why Maya is a hero.

But actually chairing a WPUK event? Wow. That's practically leading the witch coven.

I'm beginning to suspect she's powered by the thought of OJ's impotent apoplectic tears.

"You thought Suzanne Moore was scary? Check this out!"

Susanna Rustin's a good 'un. She's expressed regret at not standing up more visibly for Suzanne Moore while she (Moore) was at The Guardian so I imagine she has some skin in the game. I enjoy both her and Helen Joyce on Twitter - should be a great event.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/06/2021 09:21

Susanna is great and is no doubt going to get some flak for this.

I don't think anything much can be said about likely future direction, given that the circumstances (global pandemic) are unlikely to last forever.

All webinars have the same issues around interaction, (though WPUK online events do have a very lively chat) but WPUK have held panels on campaigning issues in recent months, not just book launches.

Having said that, sometimes book launch events can be important for all sorts of reasons, and in particular I wouldn't underestimate the importance of Rustin doing this event in terms of the breaking up of #NoDebate in the Guardian context.
