@MNHQ could do with reading this. They make a very good point. MN is unique in that it is a mainstream forum that allows debate of trans issues. This may mean a temporary hit to revenues, but in terms of political clout - it puts you up there with the big boys. If you were a PLC I suspect a large portion of your value would be based on how influential these pages have been.
Being a tool to help flog prams to women is one thing but playing a huge, internationally recognised part in changing the national dialogue round a critical social issue - that puts you in league with the big boys.

I suspect if you had a share price, it would plunge the day you split this board.

It’s a good piece. An£ agree with you justcameout

A few years ago, when this site started to be targeted, I realised the massive influence it was having.

I genuinely believe that Justine Roberts could have become one of the most powerful women in the world, on the back of this site.

At no other time in history has this number of women gathered together to talk, share experiences, support one another, and inform each other.

It's a huge phenomenon.

highame · 18/06/2021 17:32

It is terrifying though. There is no check on tech

Unless changing the national dialogue generates cash (which it may do if it increases site activity) flogging prams is pretty important to company valuation!

However Justine et al have certainly made a difference. In an age where companies bleat about brand values they have shown true integrity.

JustcameoutGC · 18/06/2021 18:02

Merrymouse, influence is the new commodity. Twitter and Facebook don't really flog anything, their value is largely based on the huge amount of personal data they have collected and in the ability to influence vast numbers of people. This is waaaaaay beyond the ability to flog merch, this can determine elections.

merrymouse · 18/06/2021 18:08

I don’t think Mumsnet is selling personal data and I suspect they aren’t trying to be the next Facebook either. If they are I retract my comment about integrity.

Many tech companies are vastly over valued.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 18/06/2021 18:12

And it's perhaps a mistake to hold out for so long, and then cave at this point, when the tide does appear to be turning.

JustcameoutGC · 18/06/2021 18:16

No not suggesting MN are purposefully doing anything dodgy with our data and I don't think their business model is on the FB track. We don't even have an edit or like button, so they are clearly not angling to be in the big tech world.

My point is, if they did, they have already demonstrated the ability to have a profound influence on a national level. Potential investors would recognise that. Splitting this board could potentially lessen their influence and their theoretical 'value'.

Tis all hypothetical, unless Justine is having a cuppa with Zuckerberg on the sly

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 18/06/2021 18:44

Why would splitting the board be a problem?

The conversations will still happen on a new board. Lots of MN users don't come near the FWR boards.

Not trying to be goady, genuinely can't see what difference it'll make. I think the traffic to FWR will drop and the trans board will rise. My confusion is how you separate feminist issues from the impact that losing our rights to single sex spaces will have on women's rights - so the new board will probably look exactly like FWR.

Genuine question. Should those of us who are GC upgrade to a paid account to help offset losses of ad revenue? I joined about a year ago, and have a free account. Not sure what the nuances are here.

I've also wondered this. I think I will

I've got a paid account and am happy to support Mumsnet. Despite the challenges and disagreements, MNHQ continues to facilitate women talking. I can only imagine the pressure that they are under when I look at all the massive businesses that capitulate to the wails from the incontinent twitter monsters. What was it that got Jess de Whal's work removed from the Royal Academy's shop - eight twitter tantrums? Confused

I have great respect for MNHQ - even tho I don't always agree with all their decisions.

EishetChayil · 18/06/2021 19:33

What happens if you have a paid account and then get banned for a "transphobic" comment? Does MN refund you?

quixote9 · 19/06/2021 08:46

Good question, EishetChayil.
