Did a judge really say that

Just did the Amnesty International “did a judge REALLY say that” quiz on Facebook. Basically a series of questions about how women are treated by different legal systems (eg how long a woman might be jailed for having a miscarriage in some countries).

I thought it was a really clever way to engage people with women’s human rights and to highlight a continued news to focus on the rights of women.

I consider myself fairly interested in women’s rights and I found the information shocking. So I can imagine people who don’t actively think about women’s rights much might also find it shocking.

Do you think there needs to be more like this to engage people who might otherwise not be that interested or aware of dangers to women’s rights?
I know you’d hope that people would just read articles or seek information themselves but in reality a lot of people need something to spark their interest or their desire to find out more.

An alternative 'did they say that' focussing on what Amnesty and other charities have done/said would be an interesting website if someone could put it together.

Here is an article with a link to the (not sure it is a judgement) piece by the judge later on in the case.

It concerns things like 'in a loving an monogamous marriage, where the woman is past child bearing age, should her ability to understand that sex could lead to pregnancy or disease be a relevant factor'.

It is a very important issue, but the judge meant it more in the sense of 'the court should be very careful not to intrude on the right of consenting adults to have sex'.

Agreed. Hayden gave quite a nuanced interim Court of Protection argument about the case and the following write-up has many useful links.

Spectator wrote it up (for anyone with access): www.spectator.co.uk/article/what-the-critics-of-the-right-to-sex-judge-got-wrong

The one about a woman being arrested in Mexico for refusing to do laundry is bollocks. She was jailed for 12 hours for failure to pay a 'disturbance' fine. Only clickbait rags picked the story up and I can find no source for it the actual arrest being to do with laundry.

The one about the judge's dumb comments on rape not leading to pregnancy fails to mention that he was formally censured for it.

Sadly Amnesty are no longer the great organisation they once were. They used to put huge store by accuracy to ensure that their word carried weight.
