If anyone is interested and remembers the Julia Grant documentaries they are all now on BBC iPlayer - search 'A Change of Sex'.
I remember watching them when they were first transmitted (1979) and it is fascinating to watch them as a part of social history and the shit storm we are in now.
They are absolutely fascinating.

Is she the one featured (fairly briefly) in the latest Adam Curtis? The way the doctor talks to her in that is gobsmacking.
I'd be interested to watch these.

I haven't watch Adam Curtis but it will be, the psychiatrist is brutal, it's awful to watch.

I do remember this very vaguely. I'm almost sure I remember an interview with her that she regretted the sex change surgery in her later years.

Her surgery wasn't a success. Julia was a bit of a legend in Manchester's gay village, although not very good at paying taxes (allegedly). My take after watching all five, Julia's life might have been happier without surgery or medication and I think Julia thought the same, I know she didn't believe in children being medicalised. Abused as a child, an abusive father, an alcoholic mother, searching to find their true identity, it raises so many questions that we still haven't found the answer to Except maybe the answer is to learn to be comfortable in your own skin which I think Julia did in later years.
