I bloody loved this series - it was so nuanced and revealing about the way women (in particular) are sexually exploited and victim-blamed. It was incredibly moving that she dedicated her acceptance speech to her intimacy coach and said that without her, actors risked the exploitation that they were trying to portray. So powerful - I just love her and IMDY.

Good news. It was an amazing drama and she's an extraordinary talent. I'm old, so I don't count, but I understand that it was quite a revelation for young women to see the nuances of sexual exploitation portrayed. Not an easy show to watch. Well done to the BBC for getting behind it (she says through gritted teeth).

TheSpottedZebra · 06/06/2021 21:07

She's an absolute polymath, isn't she?
I love her.

Summerhillsquare · 06/06/2021 21:07

About bloody time. She's a creative genius, that show should be compulsory viewing for teenagers.

GammyLeg · 06/06/2021 21:10

Amazing series. So refreshing to watch something without that male gaze/gratuitous aspect - like every other bloody thing you see onscreen about rape or young women.

Clymene · 06/06/2021 21:11

So well deserved. That was an extraordinary piece of television

TheHandmadeTail · 06/06/2021 21:13

Fantastic! Wasn’t she snubbed by the golden globes? Or in one of the other Bafta categories - I can’t remember.

ScreamingMeMe · 06/06/2021 21:21

Brilliant. Absolutely well deserved.

Yes, that was it - no male gaze, eroticising exploitation or women's fear.

Thought both her speeches were great. In fact I don’t think I’ve heard a more empathetic, humble speech ever before for her first award where she literally mentioned all her back stage team. Took hardly any credit herself for the success of Imdy. She is an impressive woman.
Did not like all the mask wearing generally, I know why etc but it was horrible to watch masked faces clapping. I could hardly recognise anyone!

MayIDestroyYou · 06/06/2021 22:17

She's won everything!!! Star

Writing, directing, editing (IIRC), Mini Series and Actress.

Couldn't be happier if I'd won the awards myself.

PaleGreenGhost · 06/06/2021 22:26

Not sure I can watch I may destroy you, but if you've not seen Michaela Coel in the comedy series Chewing Gum I envy the incredible binge watch session you are about to have. It is my absolute favourite and she is incredible in it.

IdblowJonSnow · 06/06/2021 22:29

@PaleGreenGhost
Where can I watch Chewing Gum please?

Amazing! And so well deserved Star

It was a difficult watch but so cleverly done.

elgreco · 06/06/2021 22:59

Excellent.

MayIDestroyYou · 06/06/2021 23:03

What I was most conscious of was being entertained. The satire, the yoga, the friendships, the staggering Shakespearian dialogue in the School episode - the whole thing was just magnificent.

I'd imagine every single other creative person working in TV was astonished to discover, through watching this show, just what TV can actually do.

Was just about to say similar. Great TV, really hit the spot in every way. Everything else seems formulaic now! God, could you imagine if even 10% more TV had this sort of woman-centred voice?
colouringindoors · 06/06/2021 23:12

Another one saying how totally brilliant both her speeches were - worth a look. She seems like an amazing woman.

WhatMattersMost · 07/06/2021 12:26

I need to try and watch it again. I found it scraped rather too close to the bone in a very personal way, and that is far from a criticism.

Siblingquandary · 07/06/2021 18:44

So glad it's being recognised. It truly moved and stirred me, I was engrossed in every episode.

An important piece of television.

GrownUpBeans · 07/06/2021 22:53

I thought I May Destroy You was excellent, and I'm glad she won lots of awards.

But regarding intimacy coaches, I wonder if in a few years time actors and actresses will be saying how they felt pressured into doing nude roles but felt they couldn't refuse because there was an intimacy coach so it was all 'fine'.

TheHandmadeTail · 07/06/2021 23:24

That’s a good point Beans and I think might be true for the younger ones too. I was reading an interview with one of the actresses in Sex Education and she talked about doing a sex scene and how a few days later felt very vulnerable and not sure about it but the intimacy coach told her it was a vulnerability hangover (iirc) and therefore it was all ok. I was a bit Hmm

TheVanguardSix · 07/06/2021 23:40

Love her. She is exceptional!
I May Destroy You absolutely took my breath away. I’ve watched it three times. Hands down, it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. Close to the bone indeed. It needed to be made!

She is so phenomenally talented. Everything I have seen her in she has been amazing. I didn't love bubblegum, but I could appreciate her unique voice nevertheless. She has just gone from strength to strength since then.

Billie Piper is another woman whose work is just getting better and better. I hate Suzie was amazing.
