Just binge watched this. Really good (Happy Valley grim). Kate Winslet was so good as were all the other women. A scene between her one of the other female characters in ep 7 moved me to tears. Really well written. Anyone else?

Theres a Guardian article today commending the fact that Winslett looks like a proper middle aged woman because she looks a bit chunky when she takes off her shirt.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 04/06/2021 13:33

Oh yes, me too. Fantastic acting and female characters. I loved the relationship between Mare and her friend Laura, and absolutely howled at their last scene together. It was so raw and real.

Yesss me and DH have been watching this week after seeing on gogglebox. Got NowTv subscription specially! Love KW. She’s the best!!

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 04/06/2021 13:46

Yes, loved this. Not usually a fan of Kate Winslet but she was excellent throughout. Agree on the scenes between Mare and Laura - I felt every moment of that last scene between them.

I try to avoid dramas that centre around 'man murders young woman' because VAWG is not, imo, a subject for entertainment. But the mesmerising female characters - Mare, Laura, Bethy, Siobhan, Helen (fantastic to see an older woman with a properly complex character) - in this were well worth the watch.

Anoisagusaris · 04/06/2021 13:47

Fantastic female characters. Loved it.

I really enjoyed this series! I mean, it’s grim, but you know what I mean. It was the relationships (and the fantastic acting to make them feel so natural and believable) that elevated it above the standard police drama.

emmetgirl · 04/06/2021 13:55

I loved this. Kate W is great in it.

Kit19 · 04/06/2021 13:59

Loved it! so great to see so many properly rounded female characters and relationships between them. I also loved the twist on older cop with eager young partner (Kate Winslet has a great line in withering looks)

Ultimately for me it was about grief and motherhood more than murder. Erin trying to be a good mother to her son, Mare's relationship to her children, Cassie wanting to parent Drew, Lori trying to protect Ryan. Just fantastic all round

noneedtoexpelme · 04/06/2021 14:00

Yes the scene between Mare and Laura was completely believable. So well written and acted. KW was excellent. I also like her mum - I remember seeing her in Frasier and thought she was fantastic in that. The bathroom scene with the little boy was horrendous, but again believable.

Kit yes it was about motherhood you are right. And friendship between women.

I really enjoyed but it did make me wonder if they got inspiration from Happy Valley. I love SL in that so much so I started rewatching last night!

Yes, fair enough. Just wish that fewer dramas used dead women as the jumping-off point.

TotorosCatBus · 04/06/2021 16:00

Coincidentally I binge watched this over the course of the last 2 days.

Superb acting and writing. So many amazingly written and complex female characters 👏 I did not expect to enjoy it so much.

LizzieSiddal · 04/06/2021 16:40

I started watching but hated the beginning of episode 2, where the young murder victim was shown sprawled naked in the steam. I’m just sick of this gratuitous sexualisation of violence, so didn’t watch any more of it.

I read an interview with the writer who said he'd been influenced by Happy Valley and Broadchurch.

Great to see women front and centre in a cracking drama.

Tatapie · 05/06/2021 21:22

Amazing, loved KW (laughed a lot with her), the story, the many varied relatable female characters & strong relationships. Breath of fresh air, gripping and very, very moving.

NoSquirrels · 05/06/2021 23:49

So good. I said to my DH in episode 2 - “none of these guys are trustworthy” and he looked at me like Hmm - and had to concede.

The writing, the performances, the structure- all amazing.

Terrazzo · 06/06/2021 15:03

We finished it the other day. KW is so awesome. BUT me and DH and my friend all thought the girls in the attic could be one whole series, and the DJ dad thing concluded in a second series. All the men and trucks looked so similar and that’s really the case in that sort of town in the states but I could have done with more in depth introductions of the characters as I was always getting all the men confused! Billy and John being Erin’s dad’s cousin was a lot for my small mind, they all looked the same 😄

Ah you could tell, I still really enjoyed it. KW acting was brilliant. I loved the dynamic between her and her mum. If fact her mum played a blinder too!
