Baroness Nicholson would like examples of any time you have self excluded from an NHS service due to concerns you wouldn’t be guaranteed a single sex service.

Please email her directly. She’s asked for it not to be anonymous.

Bumping.

Her talk today was very interesting. Next week's is on Stonewall policy. That will be interesting too.

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/06/2021 14:23

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria how can I listen to her talks please?

theThreeofWeevils · 03/06/2021 15:36

Funnily enough, I received a mammogram invitation today.
The letter states 'Female staff will take your mammograms'; I have been idly wondering whether that is a guarantee that one would be seen by an actual natal woman. Not so long ago, that question wouldn't have occurred to me at all.

OhHolyJesus · 03/06/2021 15:53

Is also like to listen back and hear about details of the next one. Stonewall eh? Interesting.

It was certainly recorded but I’m not sure if it will be publicly available.

What about the next one?

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 03/06/2021 18:48

I was also at the webinar and it was very interesting and frightening. A Community Paediatrician describing that if a child had their sex recorded as opposite to their biological sex - which parents have the right to do if the child is considered trans - then if a transboy comes in with stomach pains, she would not ask if there was a possibility that they may be pregnant, or if a transgirl, examine for a twisted testicle. And how it's a safeguarding nightmare with Baroness Nicholson saying how the provision of false records is a key enabler of child trafficking which is increasing in the UK.

How on earth did we get to a situation where someone's medical records can include self-identified, as opposed to actual, sex? It's in no one's interests, least of all the patient. A doctor on the call described how knowing a patient's sex is essential for almost all medical procedures.

If you email Emma on the address above, you can be on the emailing list and will be invited to the next webinar.

In the meantime, please do send her any personal experiences of where you have self-excluded from healthcare because of uncertainty of the sex of the doctor, or where you have had any problems like this at all.

I think you must just register via her office for the webinars. Here's the email: [email protected]

It is amazing to watch her work, she is an inspiration.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/06/2021 14:37

Sorry, Tawny - you already said how to join the webinar!

@theThreeofWeevils

I have seen a transwoman GP referred to as 'female' on the GP practise website.

So, no.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/06/2021 14:57

There was a case in Poole of a woman who requested a female practitioner to take her smear, but the person she got was not female. She complained and got an apology, but, yes, I agree with Arabella - no

theThreeofWeevils · 04/06/2021 15:11

I rather thought that would be the case, Arabella & vivaria. It's a bit of a Schrödinger's assertion, then: for the vast majority of service users it will be true, but if 'female' is being used to encompass 'natal males who identify as female', its inclusion in the letter is, it seems to me, a deliberate attempt to mislead. Arguably it's from the best of motives, to encourage women to attend, but it is dishonest.

There are minutes of the meeting available here:

Technically this also has an impact on someone's ability to request an opposite sex doctor, as you're allowed to do.

Women do occasionally ask for a male gynecologist; although I assume that the same sex request is more common. Obviously the preference (whichever way) can extend to other areas of medicine, and not just intimate examination.

But still, "I want a female, and I mean a real one"... it's controversial territory these days and you maybe worry that in some people's eyes, it's like insisting on a white doctor over an Asian one.

Sorry about the ugly links! No idea how to shorten them.
