Report on the BBC and Gender

"The BBC’s approach to the contested issue of gender identity is inconsistent, of varying quality, and in significant parts of the organisation, unhelpful.

Arguments around transgender rights are heated, people on all sides feel under threat, and divisions seem to be growing wider, not getting better. It is a debate that the BBC could and should be helping the country to grapple with in a way that generates light, not heat.

Yet rather than “inform, educate and entertain”, our research – “The BBC’s Gender Confusion – How The BBC Is Getting It Wrong With Gender” – suggests that much of the BBC’s output on the topic is making things worse.

We found that while there are parts of the BBC that cover things brilliantly, significant parts do not, being extremely biased, poorly informed, and even patronising.

The BBC still has an important role to play in public life. It can shine a light on sensitive issues in a way that helps audiences better understand other people’s views and help build a consensus that brings everyone together. Sadly, on the issue of gender identity it is often a partisan player, not an impartial convener. It can and must do better – and we offer this report as a contribution to help it do so."

Does this organisation have any power? Great report and so useful.

No - it it is just a think-tank. But a well argued report is useful to refer to when contacting the BBC or your MP or even when discussing resources that your child's school choses to use. I'm pleased it has been done.

That's a really good report, I hope it gets lots of press coverage.

What an excellent and well evidenced report. A pleasure to read and very useful as a resource.

JustcameoutGC · 30/05/2021 22:50

Well isn't that a lovely bit of sunshine. Who are this lot. Cant see their trustees. Lots of GC people recently appointed as common sense champions. Where does their £££ come from?

Interesting to see that Ben Hunte, who was the BBC LBQT+++ has been moved to a new role. West Africa correspondent or something.

Hunte appeared to see his role as being a cheer leader for at least the G and T. I am not sure I ever saw anything by him about the L.

He seems to have been replaced, at least temporarily, by the BBC News political reporter Jessica Parker, who was behind the recent, and interesting, interview with Nancy Kelly the CE of Stonewall.

Hopefully we will start to see some proper, and unbiased, reporting on a difficult societal issue.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 30/05/2021 23:41

It was interesting to read such open criticism of Hunte's lack of impartiality. I recall a number of threads on here identifying his shocking lack of balance. Good to see that he's finally been shifted.

Excellent and eviscerating report, it made very satisfying reading that you for sharing

Thanks for the post OP, it's on my reading list for later. Just bumping in case anyone else has missed it. My view has always been that the BBC should never be ahead of the curve because views can change and until they are well cemented, in law, it can be very tricky. They have been ahead of the curve with their children's stuff, only to have to remove after the KB case.

I think you're absolutely right.

Jessica Parker seems, from the example of this one piece, a very professional reporter able to write an old fashioned news/information piece without campaigning one way or another. She is also obviously intelligent having been one of the political reporters.
