Can't find the old thread but curious whether anyone had read today's interview.
A few things struck me about it:
-
Anyone objecting to surrogacy is again referred to as a "troll"
-
While there's a brief acknowledgement of the fact exploitation happens within surrogacy this is quickly dismissed with readers told not to "generalise"
-
Bersiner admits not one but two relationships with her surrogates in the US broke down with very little detail to explain why. Don't know if she ever covered this in her columns (I've only read a couple) but considering the fact that US surrogates can make a lot of money it seems pretty damning she managed to scare away two.
-
Here's the kicker - Bersiner admits she thinks having a child is a "right": "Anyone who wants to be a parent should be able to be a parent — fertile or infertile, gay or straight, it shouldn’t make a difference. It’s just harder for some people than others and maybe they have to go above and beyond. I always think how amazing medicine is that we even have this opportunity"
- nowhere in that paragraph is there any acknowledgment that for someone to become a parent a woman will have to be pregnant. If having a child is suddenly a "human right" where does she expect these babies to materialise from?
