Guardian issues apology to Mairia Cahill over articles questioning motives for going public about sexual abuse

The Guardian newspaper has published a formal apology and paid damages to Belfast woman Mairia Cahill over articles it published in 2014 which questioned her motives in going public about her sexual abuse at the hands of an IRA man, and her subsequent treatment by the terror organisation in the aftermath of the abuse.

Ms Cahill was 16 at the time the abuse took place.

The articles were written by Roy Greenslade, a prominent Fleet St journalist and former editor of the Daily Mirror. Earlier this year, he also admitted that he was a secret supporter of the Provisional IRA, and believed its terror campaign was justified.

He had also written under a pseudonym for the republican propaganda paper An Phoblacht/Republican News during the Troubles.

... “Waiving anonymity as a child abuse victim was not an easy decision for me, but I did so to ensure that people would know what happened = and the coverage of my treatment truant as an abuse victim also traumatised by the republican movement would mean my treatment would be less likely to happen to anyone else.

Ms Cahill said the apology had also been important in upholding the good name of BBC reporter Jennifer O'Leary, who had made a documentary about Ms Cahill's horrific treatment

That's awful. The Guardian and the journalist in question should be ashamed.

The rights of women and girls always seem to take second place when it comes to protecting a political or religious ideology.

Even if they had doubts about the story, the Guardian prides itself on not being the Sun or whatever, but seemed happy to print this male trashing of a woman.

And it serves them right that it then turns out that Roy Greenslade deliberately used his position in Fleet Street to promote the IRA*.

So Guardian revealed to be a dubious source of news twice over.

I remember that they printed some hacked credit card information from a dating site or similar suggesting that a female SNP politician had had an affair. Which given their position on the hacking scandal, was a bit fucking rich.

Wtf

I've never heard about this before.

The story was up from 2014 to 2021? 7 YEARS.

accusing a victim of sexual violence of lying for a political agenda.

Abuse started age 16.

Fuck the whole fucking lot of you bastards. A raped teenage girl needs to be defamed by men with a public voice. Because it goes against their personal politics.

Fucking fucking bastards.

7 YEARS.

Shock

I have no words. This was repulsive and vicious partisanship.

BraveBananaBadge · 20/05/2021 07:44

I'm still in shock about Roy Greenslade and this makes it all so much worse. IIRC I think the Guardian have denied knowing anything about his (ahem) politics.

Nothing new here. The Guardian was one of the last Fleet Street big names to at least begin acknowledging the ongoing grooming gang scandal.
Even now when new court cases come up frequently don't cover them.
