The Guardian newspaper has published a formal apology and paid damages to Belfast woman Mairia Cahill over articles it published in 2014 which questioned her motives in going public about her sexual abuse at the hands of an IRA man, and her subsequent treatment by the terror organisation in the aftermath of the abuse.
Ms Cahill was 16 at the time the abuse took place.
The articles were written by Roy Greenslade, a prominent Fleet St journalist and former editor of the Daily Mirror. Earlier this year, he also admitted that he was a secret supporter of the Provisional IRA, and believed its terror campaign was justified.
He had also written under a pseudonym for the republican propaganda paper An Phoblacht/Republican News during the Troubles.
... “Waiving anonymity as a child abuse victim was not an easy decision for me, but I did so to ensure that people would know what happened = and the coverage of my treatment truant as an abuse victim also traumatised by the republican movement would mean my treatment would be less likely to happen to anyone else.
Ms Cahill said the apology had also been important in upholding the good name of BBC reporter Jennifer O'Leary, who had made a documentary about Ms Cahill's horrific treatment
