When Dr Harries replied she used the phrase 'pregnant women' multiple times.
Excellent to hear.

It was marvellous how many times she said pregnant women.

ArabellaScott · 19/05/2021 17:34

Good for Dr Harries.

DialSquare · 19/05/2021 17:36

I just watched that. Brilliant! That sounded deliberate from Dr Harries and bloody good for her if so.

Warrickdaviesasplates · 19/05/2021 17:50

Brilliant! Sometimes I feel like I'm growing crazy with this sort of thing.

My local hospital has put out an announcement about their birthing suite and used the term "pregnant women and birthing people" who the bloody hell are these birthing people? Only women can give birth can't we just use the bloody word WOMEN. Is it that difficult and offensive to use the actual term.

I suppose I should at least be glad that they used "pregnant women and birthing people" instead of completely erasing the female part but it still annoyed me.

ProfessorInkling · 19/05/2021 17:53

Yes! This isn’t what I expected to read when opening the thread. Refreshing!

Aposterhasnoname · 19/05/2021 18:01

I cheered when I heard Dr Harries correct herself from pregnant people to pregnant women.

Awful isn't?! I also saw yesterday our local hospital trust mentioning 'women/birthing people'...Angry

Good news! From this brilliance I'm assuming she's a medical doctor and knows the difference. Good for her

Warrickdaviesasplates · 19/05/2021 18:30

@effiehabb that's the exact one! I was tempted to leave a comment about the "birthing people" but I did chicken out.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 19/05/2021 18:30

It's always reassuring when medics indicate they understand facts and science as some of them appear woefully ignorant Sad

titchy · 19/05/2021 18:31

Wonder if she'll be told to re-educate herself...?

StealthPolarBear · 19/05/2021 18:48

Yes! It wasn't just the fact she said it, she said it repeatedly. Hurrah!

I saw this, rolled me eyes at the wording of the question and did a little cheer when Dr Harries answered.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 19/05/2021 19:48

Hurrah for common sense!

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 19/05/2021 19:50

Was listening to the radio and noted that! I thought she was very clear.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 19/05/2021 19:56

Whenever I see the phrase "birthing people" I have a Harry Hausen moment in which I see Greek myths:

Following the Greek myths around Athena, she was born of Metis, who had been swallowed by Jupiter, and burst from her father's head, fully armed and clad in armour.[9] Jupiter raped the titaness Metis, which resulted in her attempting to change shape (or shapeshift) to escape him. Jupiter then recalled the prophecy that his own child would overthrow him as he had Saturn, and in turn, Saturn had Caelus.

Fearing that their child would be male, and would grow stronger than he was and rule the Heavens in his place, Jupiter swallowed Metis whole after tricking her into turning herself into a fly. The Titaness gave birth to Minerva and forged weapons and armour for her child while within Jupiter's body. In some versions of the story, Metis continued to live inside of Jupiter's mind as the source of his wisdom. Others say she was simply a vessel for the birth of Minerva. The constant pounding and ringing left Jupiter with agonizing pain. To relieve the pain, Vulcan used a hammer to split Jupiter's head and, from the cleft, Minerva emerged, whole, adult, and in full battle armour.

StealthPolarBear · 19/05/2021 20:03

He thinks that's bad, I had a ten pound baby breech with only gas and air :o
(not really)

Warrickdaviesasplates · 19/05/2021 20:55

@EmbarrassingAdmissions you know what, if that's what they're dealing with down at my local hospital I will gladly take back my annoyance! Haha.

@StealthPolarBear 10lb breach?! You're a bloody warrior! My DS was just under 10lb but not breach and I had all the drugs going, I always think it's such a testimony to a monthers love that after going through all a baby puts us through we still love them.

StealthPolarBear · 19/05/2021 20:57

Sorry, it was a total lie... I had two normal sized babies the right way round. Just needed to make myself feel like a warrior!
I suspect plenty of women have done that though.

OP posts:
Warrickdaviesasplates · 19/05/2021 21:08

Ah silly me I misread it! Apparently the Vikings believes that women who died in childbirth went to Valhalla just like the soldiers who died in battle.

So I think in the eyes of Vikings we'd still count as warriors. (As we bloody well should! Childbirth is a battle even the "easy" ones)

DdraigGoch · 19/05/2021 22:52

Is "birthing people" not just a new term for "midwives"?

GreyhoundG1rl · 19/05/2021 22:53

Which journalist was it? Does anyone know?

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 19/05/2021 23:06

I don't think it was a journalist I think it was one of the comments from a member of the public - but I was only half listening until I heard "pregnant people" and then cheering when Dr Harries said back "pregnant women".
