Daily Mail article points out similarities between 'the religious right' and gender ideology

Given the tired old nonsense that a Gender Critical position is somehow aligned with US right wing politics, this piece by Dominic Lawson is refreshingly clear:
www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-9585929/DOMINIC-LAWSON-religious-Right-Left-united-war-biology.html

All the piece of the jigsaw are spelled out: Gender Ideology is like religious faith, the idea of gender as an innate essence is like religious views of a soul, the DUP are creationist science deniers, but people on the left saying that babies are born without a sex also involves denying basic science.

Yes, it's in the Daily Mail (so lots of people will read it - sunlight and all that). What on earth will it take for even a small amount of critical thinking about this topic to get published in something like the Guardian?

To me it looks like the Daily Mail has watched as The Times spent years looking critically at the gender identity ideology meaning that the issue is now starting to break through into the mainstream and the Daily Mail have decided to grab some of the action.

LibertyMole · 17/05/2021 10:36

It is a religious movement. It would be interesting to know (if universities actually did their job of researching social change) what proportion of gender identity adherents/ Social Justice followers are from a Protestant tradition culturally.

I suspect Dominic Lawson got as much pleasure writing that as I did reading it. Dawn Butler will be spitting tin tacks at being portrayed as no different from Edwin Poots- brilliant !

The Guardian are full on adherents to the faith and apostates are excommunicated.

The weekend coverage in both the Mail and the Times was brilliant with numerous articles about the batshittery. The comments in the Times under the article about the new Head of the EHRC saying that women must be allowed to discuss trans issues had over 1300 comments - with many many hundreds from men and almost all of them (with a few exceptions) supportive. The public are finally being educated about what is being imposed on society via threats and intimidation and they don't like it!

Terrific piece from Lawson. What a relief to see this coming out into the mainstream.

WinterTrees · 17/05/2021 11:01

Last year in the midst of the JKR backlash Nigella Lawson retweeted an article along the lines of 'be kind, if only more people knew a young trans person they wouldn't be so vile and bigoted' etc etc.

No reason at all to think that brother and sister should agree on this or any other issue (I certainly don't agree with my brother on everything) but you only have to look at the comments, and the commenters, under her tweet to see how someone with her platform and status can really influence public perception of this issue and make it so much harder for ordinary voices to be heard without prejudice.

I'm really glad to see the pushback gaining momentum, and with proper, detailed arguments rather than just 'why can't we all just be kind to sad children.'

It absolutely feels like a religion, and follows the patterns of religious crazes (Norman Cohn's series of history books starting with The Pursuit of the Millennium are superb on this). There seems to be a part of the human brain wired for this sort of behaviour, and in a secular age those more inclined to it find other outlets than those of their forebears.

I couldn’t help smirking a little at that Grin

He got a lot in there I think.

LibertyMole · 17/05/2021 12:47

Thanks for that recommendation Ivy. I will take a look.

Mollyollydolly · 17/05/2021 12:47

It is a religion. I love seeing all this stuff in the Daily Mail. It's brilliant, so much sunlight. Things are changing.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/05/2021 12:54

That is fantastic. I almost want to share it on my Facebook but can imagine the reaction I'd get Grin

BigGreenOlives · 17/05/2021 12:55

The Daily Mail has been good on this for a while. Sue Reid carried out some interviews and research back in 2018.

I've wondered that too. Protestant philosophy has always been more vulnerable to splitting mind/body in their thinking. And I've thought more than once that CT is like secular humanism's Calvinist cousin.
SpringCrocus · 17/05/2021 18:52

I subscribe to digital Telegraph and Times, and get Guardian free.

It's very interesting to compare the coverage every day!

And yy to the religious aspects.

(I'm an environmentalist, left wing, now politically homeless gc feminist, btw)

Great article. My finger is hovering over the share to Facebook button... (I'm openly GC on fb but it always prompts a stressful discussion and not sure I'm up to it tonight)

DisappearingGirl · 17/05/2021 21:09

That was a good article indeed.

The thing is, none of my wide circle of left-leaning friends would ever read the Daily Mail or the Times (especially as the latter is behind a paywall). In fact, I only read those when they are linked on here. I used to read the Guardian, now more often the BBC, for general news headlines.

Apart from the occasional good piece in the Observer, I'm not sure how most left-leaning folk will ever see much critique of gender ideology.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/05/2021 21:46

Dominic - brother of Nigella? My my my.

McDuffy · 17/05/2021 21:52

Interesting to see his take on it! Thanks for the link Smile
