'Tis fab. Radio 4 at its finest !

TheThermalStair · 16/05/2021 16:53

Oooh thanks that sounds awesome and I will definitely download.

I really enjoyed the “Eleanor Rising” series all about Eleanor of Acquitaine, it was a great bit of female focused history. Also there was a brilliant programme recently about women working in fishing... can’t remember the name but I loved the women on it. I’d love to hear more programmes about women’s jobs.

TheThermalStair · 16/05/2021 16:54

This was it. Open country: fisherwomen www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000v9c2

As ever could have done without the patronising bloke...

Isn't it?? I was moved to recommend it to Pick of the Week for the first time ever! Maybe I really am middle aged now... Grin

As a Welsh speaker from a similar region to Gwerfyl, it's so nice to hear something like this (radio 4 is so middle-class/English, which presumably you don't notice if you are middle-class/English?)

Please can you tell me there is a link for the Eleanor series. She is a hero of mine, amazing woman.

That was glorious. I had never heard of her before. I did know about the blue books and how it set off a massive attack on the freedoms of Welsh women, teaching them to feel shame for nudity and love making outside of marriage, but that there were brash Welsh women poets whose words had been censored by prudish people choosing what we are allowed to read.

TheThermalStair · 18/05/2021 00:04

Thanks Bore!

Rhannion · 18/05/2021 00:22

Thank you very much Bore.

If anyone wants more feminist radio, "Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics" (stand up comedian, I think, who talks about ancient people and characters) is fantastic - there is a recent one on Medusa which is really thought-provoking. Asking questions like, why do the stories expect us to empathise with Medusa's killer rather than with her?

Rhannion · 20/05/2021 18:37

Have you seen the statue of Medusa holding the head of Perseus ?

DaisyWaldron · 20/05/2021 18:45

I hadn't heard of her until earlier this year, when the Vagina Museum did some stuff about her, possibly for International Women's Day, and I loved it.

Rhannion · 20/05/2021 19:45

There is an exhibition of the work of Ray Harryhausen on at National Gallery of Modern Art Edinburgh at present and his Medusa is featured.

Rhannion · 20/05/2021 19:48

Elizabeth Chadwick has a trilogy of books about Eleanor, so did Jean Plaidy. The Lion in Winter with Peter O’Toole as Henry and Kate Hepburn as Eleanor is a brilliant version of the latter part of their lives.

Rhannion · 20/05/2021 19:56

The first book I read about Eleanor was a young adult novel, A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver which is very good and that sparked my interest in her.

TheThermalStair · 20/05/2021 20:14

ooh that sounds great @Rhannion

I think sometimes people underestimate how much kids/YA books spark our interest and views

Rhannion · 26/05/2021 14:38

Just wanted to mention a musical podcast called The Ballad Of Anne and Mary about female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, very entertaining and well done
