The tweets are grossly mis-characterising the draft laws. I've just read them and they read quite reasonably. The references to age 14 are regarding consent and essentially say that 14 year olds must consent to any surgeries. That's a good thing.

"must consent" in the sense that surgeries cannot be done if the young person doesn't consent.
OvaHere · 13/05/2021 22:55

It's not a good thing though because as the High Court ruled in the Bell case a 14 year old doesn't have the capacity to consent to something life changing and irreversible. Whether the 14 year old thinks they want to remove their breasts or genitals is not the point.

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 13/05/2021 23:19

How can a 14 year old consent to loss of sexual function in future and infertility? They have no idea how they're going to feel in their 20s & 30s +, or who they might meet.

@sanluca

So the Netherlands has also just sent the bill to be reviewed. The only objections so far: if people who change their sex marker understand what they are doing. The reason given in the law proposal: because too many people can't get a medical diagnosis because the experts disagree on giving them one.
@sanluca Sorry to @ you, I don't normally, but interested in NL. Is the bill about officially changing sex marker (also to X) or is it also about more informal self ID?

What's the name of the bill - I can also look it up.

highame · 14/05/2021 08:37

I am unsure how far this will get. The Federations have powers to amend and change and all of the Federations will not be of the same views. I would imagine, unless someone has non-twitter information that there is a way to run before this becomes law. Will discuss with friend who has lived in Germany for years and update if I can get good intel.

MrsWooster · 14/05/2021 08:42

I wonder if it will go ahead now that it seems to be against the run of play in Sweden etc?

sanluca · 14/05/2021 10:30

@aweegc

www.rijksoverheid.nl/actueel/nieuws/2021/05/06/vereenvoudiging-transgenderwet-wijziging-geslacht-in-geboorteakte-makkelijker

It is about changing your official sex marker by visiting town hall and saying you want your marker changed. No questions asked. This will be on your ID until 2025 when the marker will no longer be on any IDs.

It is not self ID by law, but by stealth. Legally transwomen who have had their marker changed cannot be refused entry into womens facilities, we already have mixed sex wards and sport is already open to any who identify differently to their sex. We already have issues but limited in numbers. Now any non gender dysphoric person who will never medically transition, can change their marker, women cannot trust that any male in their facilities is indeed a transwoman and of course it is bigoted to ask. All consultation focus on the impact on transpeople, no word about women or girls. Not a word about expected percentage of people who will use this option. Also no mention of non binary options or gender fluid.

Going to be a mess...

aweegc · 19/05/2021 05:59

@sanluca
Thanks for this. I didn't realise sport was by ID too. FFS.

I'm wondering now how it is in schools. My friend had to make a MAJOR fuss about stopping her teenage daughter being forced to communally shower after PE. It was single sex... I'm not sure if it's normal at Dutch high schools to have to be naked in front of classmates, or just her school.

I don't want any woman to be sacrificed in this so perhaps it would be great if there was a sudden influx of people registering as the X or opposite sex. That might make people notice...if the media reported it.

[quote HecatesCatsInFancyHats]Awful, Helen Joyce shared this earlier. No idea what can be done. Maybe UK MP could raise it in the HOC?

I know in theory Brexit is meant to be amicable but I suspect that in practice the Germans are not remotely in the mood to listen to British lecturing.

franke · 19/05/2021 20:18

Self ID has been rejected by the German Parliament. Phew.

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 19/05/2021 20:57

This is such a relief

franke · 19/05/2021 20:58

It really is. Rejected quite emphatically too.

BeanieSue · 19/05/2021 21:04

I'm surprised at so few voted for it. But so relieved. There was a good speech from a CDU politician during the hearing.

UppityPuppity · 19/05/2021 22:49

Yes - fantastic news.

14 year olds should not have their sex, pubertal development (needed to become adult) sexuality, sexual function and fertility endangered. It’s not healthcare, it’s child abuse.
