Diversity Monitoring Form

I've just started an application for a role within the civil service and they have changed their diversity questionnaire to gender, with the choices of man, woman, prefer to self-describe, and prefer not to say.

I'm feeling irked by this and was going to put prefer not to say, but I do have an opinion so chose prefer to self-describe and wrote "I do not have a gender, my sex is female".

A small stand against the 'genderisation' of the work place and recruitment policies.

I do that when I get a stupid form like that. Or I ask what relevance it could possibly have.

Nonmaquillee · 12/05/2021 17:05

Well done
I’ve done the same recently

I assume there is another question about your sex somewhere in the recruitment process because Payroll will need to know your sex for HMRC.
Good answer for the gender question though.

Pretty sure the question used to be sex and the options were male/ female/ prefer not to say.

Why change it? The gender question makes no sense. Add an extra category about gender if you feel you need to collect the data.

No further question about sex. Questions about sexuality, but nothing to define if male or female.

That's Stonewall law isn't it OP? Inaccurate, unscientific and generally failing to comply with UK law.

I had this question on a couple of forms I had to complete for DS (since he was under 16 then) - these were for organisations/activities that would have included residential/overnight stays.

They didn’t ask sex but only gender (with a while raft of options). I asked both what safeguards were in place to ensure single sex facilities (especially washing and sleeping) - neither bothered their backsides to get back to me.

OhLordyWhatNow · 12/05/2021 17:18

How can the civil service ensure the organisation supports protected characteristics as defined in Equality Act 2010 if the data isn't collected in the first place?

In that case 'prefer not to say' may have been a better option - then they'd have to get back to you to know what to pass on to HMRC.

I have to have regular lateral flow tests for work and the registration form asks me something convoluted about what is recorded in other places rather than allowing to choose sex = female.

I personally feel these constant challenges to our reality are micro aggressions and they wear me down and distress me as such.

OhLordyWhatNow · 12/05/2021 17:22

I fear that if I'd put prefer not to say they'd make an assumption based on my forename, even though it can be used by either sex but is a more popular female name.

Once you got your first salary payment you could ask HR how they got your sex as you can't recall giving it to them and your name is unisex. Just be curious...

Filling out the form fir DS's passport renewal and was asked gender and the options were male or female. sigh

OhLordyWhatNow · 12/05/2021 17:38

I can remember at school (eons ago) that forms were changed from sex to gender because idiots wrote 'yes please' instead of ticking the male or female box.

But... this is a form for adults in a professional organisation. There should be no reason not to collect the information with the appropriate question. (If sniggering idiot did reply 'yes please' that's a very quick sift out of the pile).
