Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Iran’s election to women’s-rights body makes a mockery of UN and feminism

The Biden administration has joined Canada and Europe in a most disciplined reticence to criticize the Islamic Republic’s mounting repression, in the hope that the lack of scrutiny will be seen by the regime as another concession to curb its nuclear program.

Feminists in the West, meanwhile, have also taken what amounts to an oath of silence about this all too obvious affront to their purported convictions.
“Microaggressions” on college campuses and correct use of gender pronouns elicit more attention than millions of Iranian women denied the most basic rights as their oppressors. Sisterhood, so it seems, is not global.

Agree it's shocking they got that role- it was in the news at the time. It's yet again as if women are being trolled.

Somehow the author seems to try to implicate all feminists who live in 'the West' in this decision. And that none of them give a fuck about women's situations around the world. Which I think is a bit harsh tbh.

Until I stumbled across Mumsnet, I would have said similar to the author. The vast majority of what is presented as feminism in the mainstream tends to be all about pronouns, microaggressions, self-care and empowerment (words I've come to hate). So many NGOs and UN organisations for women are captured and immersed in this kind of talk.

I've had arguments online with so called feminists thinking the hijab or niqab is "empowering" simply because their mate is Muslim and a nice person and doesn't feel oppressed. Zero ability or interest to think any deeper.
I had joined a Facebook group for local feminist action and it was ruined by trans activists and woke bros. No ability to have any robust discussion or debate because some emotionally incontinent person might feel "triggered". Barely anyone posts there now apart to advertise some shite like "queer events" or trying to promote their Instagram page. I was really starting to give up on it all.

Mainstream intersectional feminism is pointless and toothless. What has it actually achieved in recently years?

It was only when I found FWR and discovered a space where women can speak their mind and debate that I realised it wasn't me that was the aberration but what's presented as intersectional feminism all around me.

It's a tricky one for some on the Left - I remember OJ tying himself into all sorts of knots while trying to simultaneously back Iranian female protesters while still backing Iran against the Great Satan.

I agree with you OP. I am always dismayed when I see these regimes getting promotions on human rights bodies - it really is as if women and our rights as humans do not matter. And don't get me started on the way that every single democracy in the World is based upon the rights of "freedom of religion" - since all religions (and I say this as a baptised Catholic who left that religion over the treatment of women - and subsequently become a non believer) are based on the subjugation of women. Therefore, I as a feminist, believe that all religions are against the rights of women. And I despair when I see women defend these misogynistic religions.

Annasgirl I agree, all religions and cults place women lower than men in whatever hierarchy they have.

I follow Masih Alinejad and Yasmine Mohammed on Twitter, they are trying sso hard to give Muslim and ex Muslim women a voice. I have learnt so much from them.
