@Twizbe

I love MB. I'm a Classics graduate and have read all her books. I've been to a few lectures and debates from her. One in which she absolutely trumped Boris Johnson!

Her book women and power is a must read. She is well aware of how Twitter is used to silence women, especially intelligent ones.

I love that lecture. I think it is still available on YouTube. Only Mr Johnson would like his undergraduate degree and being a publicly educated man would be enough to take on a professor.

Mary Beard is epic

@Thatwentbadly omg I just looked it up and you're right. Gonna be watching that tomorrow. Can't believe it was 2015! That was pre kids for us. I dragged my husband along as well. Gonna be looking out for the young us in the audience now

💖Mary Beard.

That's all

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/04/2021 23:22

Oh the Follow Police are so tedious.

Aren't they.

LibertyMole · 27/04/2021 23:25

‘God, Twitter is unbearable.

Love Mary. Too good for that cesspit.’

This.

SirVixofVixHall · 27/04/2021 23:25

@MrsTerryPratchett

When I was at university, a thousand years ago, we were encouraged to read widely. This included primary texts from leaders of the IRA, right wing and fascist organisations, the IMF and World Bank, Central American dictators. All sorts. Because perspective is important. Understanding other people is important.

Is it not important to know things anymore, even if you don't agree with them? I cannot fathom the idea that we should all read and follow within a tiny bubble. How does anyone learn or challenge anything.

As a historian I think MB probably knows that.

This .
Wauden · 27/04/2021 23:56

Does this sound familiar: people in the past sniffing out what other read and reporting them?

HeirloomTomato · 28/04/2021 00:04

Ah, I see Goodwife Mary has been associating with womenfolk who do consort with the devil and use their sharp tongues to incant spells ('sex be real, it be'). To the ducking stool with her!

I love Mary Beard.

Unsure33 · 28/04/2021 00:09

@Thatwentbadly

Yes still on you tube . Just watched part of it.

Entertaining.

NiceGerbil · 28/04/2021 00:40

It's a surprise to anyone that she might be a sex exists old school type of feminist?

I'd be pretty surprised if she wasn't :/ (although sometimes there are surprised obv)...

NiceGerbil · 28/04/2021 00:41

I also agree that it's a bad idea to only consume stuff from one POV, something I have been very guilty of in the past.

I cannot say ‘YES!’ loudly enough to this.

Read widely.

Always go to the source.

But then, if people had done that, they could not have complained about JK Rowling.

Sillyduckseverywhere · 28/04/2021 07:47

I love her 🥰

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 28/04/2021 08:00

Always go to the source.

A distinct failure to do that seems happy to be strolling about in public virtually megaphoning their lack of due diligence or care for verification ( Independent and Times articles on Maya Forstater).

Beard is a very fine scholar.

highame · 28/04/2021 08:43

Yes SirVix and Terry but I also being told that reading both sides was a must from both my school and my dad. That it would teach me to read critically. Nowadays I find the standard of journalism awful and am much happier once I can get hold of some good source material.

I like Mary but someone called her a 'national treasure' and once that happens it ruffles my feathers Grin

Or dangerous. Creepy little Eyes.
highame · 28/04/2021 08:45

What a dreadful post.....I didn't think that through. When I was a teenager and about newspapers.

EsmaCannonball · 28/04/2021 08:48

If you don't denounce the witch then you might be a witch yourself.

I don't want to go into too many details but, not that long ago, one of my friends was called into a meeting at work because one of his colleagues had reported him for following an American right-wing commentator on Twitter. My friend pointed out he follows hundreds of people on Twitter, he doesn't necessarily like everyone he follows and he was just interested in American politics. Nothing more happened but he said the whole thing was sinister and made him feel like he was being watched. We are living in very Year Zero times.

I think she'd be grovelling and apologising and promising to so better if she weren't Wink

WindyPudding · 28/04/2021 09:02

Ha ha I saw her “is there a problem” response yesterday, love it!

Beard is the queen of rational, good-humoured, no-bullshit clear-mindedness.

FuriousAndFrustrated · 28/04/2021 09:07

I'm apparently blocked by the WoollyGrammarian even though I have no idea who they are and I don't think I've ever interacted with them before.

Fancy that!

I think they’ve protected their tweets.
