The Life Scientific - Jane Clarke on Protein Folding

Sometimes the BBC redeems itself.

This interview with Jane Clarke, teacher turned researcher, is inspiring. There is at least one example of systemic misogyny, and other examples of this being countered. And she herself points out that it helped to have a high earning and supportive husband, but that shouldn’t detract from her achievements.

I love the Life Scientific- so interesting and inspiring. And IIRC there’s a 50:50 split of female/male scientists.

LostToucan · 27/04/2021 20:04

Wasn’t she great? So supportive of encouraging young people, especially women, to take up a career in science.

Was also interesting to hear that her mother, grandmother and (I think) great grandmother had all been teachers.

BraveBananaBadge · 27/04/2021 20:13

Haven't listened yet but there are always a lot of inspiring women on TLS, and with that a lot of stories of their careers not really getting started until later in life too, which I love.

The4Seasons · 27/04/2021 20:14

Yes, I thought it was great. I especially liked the bit about the leaky pipeline in STEM careers- it isn't fixed by changing the water, we need to fix the pipe. I used that it work today!

ErrolTheDragon · 27/04/2021 20:16

Thanks for the heads up - I always mean to listen to The Life Scientific but too often miss it. In this case I'm interested in her general field as well as her life.

LostToucan · 27/04/2021 20:21

I liked her saying that giving talks to big audiences is easy compared to teaching chemistry to the bottom set of 15 year old boys on a Friday afternoon.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 27/04/2021 20:27

This is such an inspiring series.

borntobequiet · 27/04/2021 20:28

I should have said kudos to Jim Al-Kahlili for his interviewing style, it’s always spot on.

Protein folding is beautiful and so useful.

nauticant · 27/04/2021 21:09

Remember that the repeat is on Radio 4 in 20 minutes (at half 9).

TabbyStar · 27/04/2021 21:12

I get it automatically as a podcast, I don't listen to all of them but I really like the mix of science and biography for the subjects I'm interested in, and yes he does do equal numbers of female and male guests.

@EmbarrassingAdmissions

Protein folding is beautiful and so useful.
Understatement of the year.Grin
Melroses · 27/04/2021 21:52

I like this programme. I don't bother to listen to radio 4 much now, but this was always good - so off to find it. The leaky pipe stuff is interesting.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 27/04/2021 22:06

Thanks for posting this, looks really interesting I will listen tomorrow.

I like protein folding!

Tatapie · 27/04/2021 22:21

I never had any interest in science at school; this programme is so good it makes me wish I had had tho! Excellent interview today, fascinating subject, interesting life story, both well told. And what a great role model.

Aprilinspringtimeshower · 27/04/2021 22:54

Another one who thinks TLS is brilliant. I find even people whose area I’m not that interested in, end up being really interesting. Always something to learn.
My favourite bedtime podcast- haven’t got to this one yet though

ErrolTheDragon · 28/04/2021 20:04

I started listening this morning, but was interrupted.
Meanwhile, a bit tangential but having just added this link to another thread, it occurred to me TLS fans might enjoy it.

Oooh thank you!

LizzieSiddal · 28/04/2021 20:08

I too love this programme. It so inspirational and imo, it should be played to all secondary school children each week.

MoiCnoi · 28/04/2021 20:11

I heard it and thought she was great. It's such an interesting programme.

Also the leaky pipe- don't blame the water, fix the pipe!
