Hstorian and archivist Gail Malmgreen gave talk a last week to the Newark about the astonishingrange of Newark-related materials in Washington, DC collections.

Her talk included the papers of Nannie Helen Burroughs, a Black educator and nationally renowned speaker among Black Baptist churches, whose "trusted right-hand woman" traveled nationally and tirelessly on her behalf and turns out to have been Newarker Ella Whitfield

You can watch Gails talk here here

All these collections, and more, are described in the Newark Archives Project website: nap.rutgers.edu

I'm looking forward to watching this - I'm always fascinated by the research into the role of churches in healthcare in the US, particularly for some broad categories such as black women.

It's an open research question as to whether it's the spirituality that makes the difference or if it's because membership of a church implies a social network and people thinking of you and looking out for you.
