Help me understand conversion therapy

I remember watching “oranges are not the only fruit” and obviously thinking conversion therapy is abhorrent.

I am concerned that people who have been sexually abused may identify as trans to try to escape their female nature and am concerned about laws made to prevent conversion therapy meaning that other explanations cannot be entertained, such as talking therapies that aim to explore the desire behind wanting to change sex.

What I don’t understand is, all the things which are obviously absolutely wrong if carries out as part of conversion therapy, aren’t they already illegal just because they’re completely out of order to enact on anyone, for any reason?

What would you be allowed to do currently as conversion therapy that isn’t illegal already because it’s just plain violent or sadistic?

Good questions. And another one - who's doing it, such that we urgently need a law to stop them?

A straight man who has decided he wants help with his porn addiction can ask a minister at a church to discuss strategies to help curb his use, including prayer. A gay man will not be able to do the same as the prayer will be considered conversion therapy to try to somehow stop him being gay, when all he wants is some prayer for a porn addiction, and the minister fully understands this. The minister could be prosecuted for offering prayer, even when it has been requested. The term is confusing because someone who becomes a Christian, often refers to this as a time of conversion.

That’s a tricky one. I can understand that large prayer meetings with a single person as the focus could be very intimidating and oppressive if they were praying for something you did not want, but very uplifting if praying for something you had requested. I don’t know how you ban one and not the other.

I suppose that would be about consent?
