Excellent news from Lidl today 👏
"Lidl Ireland’s coupon scheme aims to target period poverty, an internationally recognised health and social issue defined as the inability to afford safe, hygienic sanitary products."

Users can register through the app from today and start availing of products from 3rd May. Thanks Lidl Ireland Smile

Well done them. I think this is better than the Scottish initiative as picking them up in a supermarket is more straightforward.

Fantastic news, positives - it is discreet as it is done through the app so it is just art of the normal shop and those that can and want to will still be able to get them.

The only really negative thing I can think of is that you have to have the app, does Ireland Lidl have WiFi in their stores otherwise this relies on people having data, it is also making people have the app which makes it seem less of an altruistic action.

Overall, despite my app concerns this is a good thing.

AfternoonToffee · 19/04/2021 18:01

"can and want to pay".

I swear I type right and my phone just takes words out. Grin

WipeYourFeet · 19/04/2021 18:12

@AfternoonToffee - you don't necessarily need the app, they're also distributing sanitary products through the Simon Community & the ladies Gaelic Football Assoc.

bualadh bos!!

ForeverFaithless · 19/04/2021 18:13

I think this is brilliant, well done Lidl.

Afternoon Toffee - I'm assuming it will work like the current 'treats' in the app, you can activate at home and only need to scan your card, stored in the app, in store. You don't need data to display the card.

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/04/2021 18:18

This is great.

Be especially good for these pandemic times where so many jobs have been lost and many are in a dire situation.

Anything that keeps women employed and girls in school.

AfternoonToffee · 19/04/2021 18:26

Ok, that's good if you don't need to actually use data to activate it, as that potentially could be a big barrier.

This is such a great idea!

Having the voucher means they don't need to worry about anyone taking the mick and abusing the scheme (I'm not saying that people would, but it will reassure the high-ups). It sounds discreet, very convenient for anyone who has a Lidl nearby, and lets you have some choice in the products you get.
Yes, you have to get the app (which I think is free?) and it encourages people to shop there, but they're a business!
And there will still be some people who fall through the cracks- very young girls who don't have smartphones and are in abusive family situations or are too embarrassed to ask their parents for products, but overall it seems like a really positive scheme that will help girls and women feel comfortable and help school attendance.

Hopefully schools continue signing up for, is it the red box project? And catch some of these girls.

Bergamotte · 19/04/2021 19:14

Exactly, Scully!

peanutbutterjimjams · 19/04/2021 20:08

That's fantastic!

And their own brand don't stink like a zoflora factory.

Go Lidl!

Morrison’s have launched this too under the banner ‘Ask for the package that Sandy has left for you’. Anyone can approach customer service desks and ask for the package left by Sandy and will be given free sanitary products no questions. Being generally well met in the media.

They aren't calling us menstruators eitherSmile

Hope they're better than Aldi's own brand...

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised by the references to women and girls in the IT article too.
