The most damning evidence to quote on the doorstep

OK SNP Councillor/canvasser turns up on the doorstep and I have a chance to tell them why I won’t vote for them. I will cite:

How they voted against Johann Lamont’s ‘six words’ amendments to the Forensics Bill to state ‘sex’ not gender
How they decided against having ‘sex’ as a protected characteristic in the Hate Crime Bill
The ‘Boards’ act that ForWomen Scotland lost recently but are appealing

But what else is a damning fact to hit them with - is there a particular pledge they have signed that absolutely contravenes the Equality Act 2010? Anything that unthinkingly regurgitates the mantra (you know the one I mean)

And what about the Labour Party (particularly the Scottish LB in my case but more generally would be good too) I can cite the vile trolling Rosie Duffield got - was she defended at all by her party?

And the Green Party - I remember seeing a Pledge recently that talked about defeating ‘sex-based’ protections or words to that effect - was it an LGBT pledge at a recent conference by a transgender party member? I don’t necessarily want to go down the Amy C route as I think they can just fall back on a bad apple argument (even though I know it went more deeply than that) Any particularly damning things I could say about, for example Ross Greer or Patrick Harvie (I know, where to start?)

And the Lib Dem’s - any corkers I can quote at them? (I know there are)

The Tory Party I can deal with without going anywhere near Women’s Rights.

I just want concrete examples to quote because I don’t fancy just having an existential argument with someone on my doorstep by asking them to ‘define what a woman is’ because, as important as that is I think it could just lead to them dismissing me as ‘one of those GC feminists’ and I want a proper conversation.

I thought it might be useful to have a thread where damning facts could be listed - I have read so many jaw-dropping things on this board but I often fail to find the right examples when I go looking through all the posts. Anything that actual party members have said or voted on would be particularly useful. I want to be able to name names (in terms of MPs who have voted against women’s rights, have tweeted inflammatory, antagonistic, anti-women mantras etc)

I’m hoping that this could be used as a resource for other people who are going to be faced with a load of electioneering flannel and obfuscation on their doorsteps.

(and I’m a MN veteran of over a decade but a serial name-changer)

I think I would probably say that I would like to discuss my concerns with them (SNP) but the Hate Crime Bill means that I would be in danger of incriminating myself by the use of certain words or discussion of certain topics.

Labour - a candidate in Aberdeen posting an image on Twitter of a figure representing a grassroots women's rights organisation in a KKK hood springs to mind.

Greens - I wouldn't even bother, tbh.

LibDem - ditto.

Green Parties manifesto has said that they want to put Yogyakarta principle into law. They include removing sex from birth certificates.

SNP / ScotGov have presided over Police Scotland who allow rapist's to ID as women and record their crimes as such.

persistentwoman · 19/04/2021 11:56

I always think Lisa Nandy's wish to house male born sex offenders and paedophiles in women's prisons is a good thing to ask about. MNHQ deleted me once for stating that - my post was reinstated once I send them a link to her making the comments.

I might ask any of the Labour tribe if that's party policy?

Here: 2.1 Recognition for non-binary/non-gendered people: Many of us (some surveys estimate up to about one in three of transgender people) do not identify with one of the two most frequently encountered genders (female and male). Currently it is impossible to apply for most public services (driving licence, benefits, interactions with Revenue, etc) or for an Irish passport without declaring yourself to be either male or female. Most commercial organisations (e.g. banks) also require such information, or use a restricted range of titles that are all gendered. This denial of a person’s existence is a very basic infringement of human rights and contravenes our obligations under the Yogyakarta Principles (a set of international legal principles codifying how international human rights law applies to sexual orientation and gender identity, drafted by Irish human rights lawyer Michael O’Flaherty and drawn up at a meeting of international lawyers and human rights experts including former President Mary Robinson)

Why are they not outraged that there have been three dead women a week in lockdown, all murdered by men?

How will they protect women from male violence if they refuse to recognise what sex is?

ScoldsBridal · 19/04/2021 12:43

Yes the Yogharta principles to be enshrined in law is a definite conversation starter. Keep them coming - this is great - depressing and enraging - but great.

"A study of more than 3,000 patients at a UK gender clinic found only three who had permanently detransitioned."

Oooh that's a lie.

They searched patient records, created over the course of one year, for words associated with detransition or regret, then the authors read those flagged reports to identify any evidence that they had detransitioned or regretted transitioning.

So what we can actually say is of 3398 clinic patients, who were assessed that year (August 2016-August 2017), 10% expressed regret or had detransitioned (sometimes temporarily).

We certainly can't say anything more than that, or anything about the patients who didn't go back to the clinic that year (perhaps because they detranstioned), or whether further on, any more had re-evaluated.

Kotatsu · 19/04/2021 12:49

Or rather, it's extremely mis-leading.

Rather like my 7 year old opening the fridge and declaring there is nothing he can have as a snack.

334bu · 19/04/2021 12:55

Actually SNP eventually voted for the " Six Words" Only Greens and Lib Dems voted against it. However, it was only done at last minute.
only Labour party voted to include women in the Hate Bill.
Prison and rapists being recorded as women are the zingers.

Scout2016 · 19/04/2021 12:59

Labour - Angela Rayner's video on trans remembrance day... compared with the very little fuss Labour make about the actual murders of women that are actually happening in the UK.
Not standing up for Rosie Duffield and hen making her apologise. Not condemning the abuse. Not standing up for women full stop, Starmer's silence is huge.
Alex Sobel calling those who raised concerns bigots and saying he doesn't believe there should be single sex spaces.

Kotatsu · 19/04/2021 13:03

Oooop! Wrong thread!

AnyOldPrion · 19/04/2021 16:08

The most recent event that stood out for me vis-a-vis the SNP was the video Nicola Sturgeon made after a few transactivists had left the party and the contrasting silence over the attacks on Joanna Cherry and all the women who were leaving.

I suspect her silence may well have contributed to the large number of politically active women who defected to Alba, with the result that Alba are the only party fielding more female candidates than male.

Tibtom · 20/04/2021 08:06

only Labour party voted to include women in the Hate Bill.

It was the conservatives who voted for sex to be included in the hate crimes bill, requested an amendment to allow discussion of transideology, and then voted against the hate crime bill.
