On Monday 26 April, MPs will debate this petition in the House of Commons, and a Government Minister will respond.

Tell MPs about your views on proposals to grant police new powers relating to protest by completing this short survey: www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/0LIDQC/

Your responses to this survey will help MPs to understand concerns about new police powers relating to protests. The Petitions Committee might publish a summary of survey responses, which could include some or all of your comments, and MPs may read them out in the House of Common. What MPs say may be reported in the press and appear on the news, so please don't share any personal information that you don't want to be public.

Please respond by Friday 16 April, to make sure your responses can inform the debate.

I'm struggling to get excited about losing the right to protest when I've already lost the right to say what I'm protesting about.

RedHoodGirl · 09/04/2021 20:20

Who is running the survey?

Thecatonthemat · 09/04/2021 20:25

What the hell has gender to do with policing ? luckily there is room for comments

stumbledin · 09/04/2021 20:32

The sruvey is being run by the House of Commons Petition Committee - or something like that.

But MNHQ wont let me post the link here.

Please go to the mumsnet petition link to see what this is about.

And by the way I was impressed that the HoC, unlike the Census understood that Sex and Gender Identity are two very diffrent things. So I did what I did with the census. Ignored the identity question. Best thing is to show that to most of us it is irrelevant. Not even worth a comment.

Thank you for this link. The final straw for me was when XR delayed ambulances getting to hospital and stopped working class people getting to work. I hope they note my support of stronger police action. Hopefully these disruptive events will be limited. The police will then be freed up to deal with protecting victims of crime including VAWG.

I wrote a whole essay about actual protest as opposed to people having a staycation at the expense of those who cant afford not to go to work. But added I thought picket of workplaces where employees had genuine concerns should not be limited.

Unfortunatley I got a stern note telling me I was only allowed 10(?) characters and I think mangled the whole thing in trying to do a quick edit.

But I strongly said it wasn't for the police to say who could or couldn't demonstrate. That isn't their role. But obviously should be consulted over the implications of say a large march or a sailing boat at Oxford Circus.

I think for the police to be handed the role of what is legitimate protest is politicising them, and typical underhand politics by MPs who want to be liked and blame someone else for crackdowns.

Is this the petition you mean

petition.parliament.uk/signatures/110163999/signed
If so I’ve signed it

stumbledin · 10/04/2021 15:45

@dowser please do NOT put the petition link it.

I have made it quite clear the original thread got moved to petitions because of MNHQ and now you have put it in again.

Can you report this to MNHQ and get the post deleted.

All the information needed is in the mumsnet link I put in the op to this thread.

This is to allow discussion of the options re policing.

NOT about the petition.

Is it possible for someone to succinctly explain the changes.

The gov response on the survey is changes to stop people gluing themselves to trains, blocking emergency vehicles and disrupting the distribution of newspapers.

I havent got an issue with any of the above being banned, so what are the changes?

Indeed. Given the limited amount of time left before the Earth becomes uninhabitable, it's imperative that we're at least able to enjoy it without obstruction.
Tealightsandd · 10/04/2021 23:54

FifteenToes Climate change won't be tackled by stopping working class people getting to work, taking police man and woman power away from protecting victims of violent crime, or delaying ill, disabled, and elderly people getting to hospital. Nor will it help smashing bank windows. What might help is rationing of international travel and increased use of contraception (encouraged through education and better access). Unpopular and perhaps unlikely to happen but there you go. Causing disruption and distress to the vulnerable and poor definitely doesn't help. XR haven't seemed too bothered about our lack of border restrictions during covid. You'd think they'd support restricted borders given the pollution caused by travel.
