Lee Clatworthy from national transgender charity Sparkle said that the process remains "overly long-winded" and a reduction in cost "won't compel more to apply".

Compel?

Is this just the trans ideology Humpty Dumptyness of "words mean just what I want them to mean"?

And also:

... fewer than 5,000 people successfully obtaining a GRC prior to the consultation.

This presents the GRA as maliciously obstructive, rather than cautiously protective of people's well-being. What proportion of people who applied for a GRC were granted one? How has that changed over time since the GRA?

Equalities Minister Liz Truss said the application process needed to be made "kinder and more straightforward"

fewer than 5,000 people successfully obtaining a GRC prior to the consultation.

This is in line with what was anticipated at the time the GRA was passed. It was estimated at that time that there were about 5,000 transsexual people in the UK. The tiny number of people affected was one reason why we have the GRA. It has worked exactly as intended.

Will people who have shelled out a fiver to get a GRC now complain that it is unfair to charge them £75 to 'update' their passport?

So it is now even cheaper to access sex protected spaces...
The whole GRA and GRC should go, be repealed and removed from the statutes.

OhHolyJesus · 08/04/2021 12:03

I also saw the argument of having for cheaper passports, birth certificates and marriage certificates being made. The cost of obtaining U.K. citizenship is extraordinarily high by comparison though no one is campaigning to make it easier for that group because they don't have the magic identity.

BlueLipstickRocks · 11/04/2021 19:51

I have a GRC.

There was not a single thing wrong with the process.

The problem is when people for whom it wasn't intended for try and make it fit. It was written for medicalised transsexuals.

The cost of the GRC itself was never the main cost.

One trans woman I know spent over £800 getting her GRC because you need doctors letter that aren't available on the NHS, she needed a new diagnosis (£250 for one hour with a specialist) because her original diagnosis was done years ago by a doctor in a country that the GRC panel don't recognise).

Then she needed a paid-for medical exam to prove that she had surgery because the GRC panel do not recognise official confirmation letters from surgeons outside the UK. That's right - she had to go to her GP and show him her genitals and pay for the privilege.

As someone with a GRC.... utter nonsense.

These stories about dehumanising processes and high costs are complete fabrications.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 11/04/2021 20:42

Egg bloody zactly. It's not trying to compel people to apply. It's not meant to be taken lightly and shouldn't be easy. It should be reserved for people who transition, at the end of the process. I am anti self ID but pro GRA.

Quite. There is no requirement to have had any body modification in order to get a GRC. And the UK government recognised the gender reassignment documentation of every country that has a formal process for it.

I don't know who Shizuku thinks is being helped by this ridiculous disinformation.

Sort of.

It's not required but it is expected and in people who have not had surgery there has to be extensive evidence submitted to demonstrate why not. There is no provision within the GRA to allow I GRC to be issued to someone who simply doesn't want to.

Yes, exactly. For this reason I could have accepted the GRA and GRCs - for a very specific, very small cohort of people.

Throwing it open to allow absolutely anyone who fancies a shottie at being a gender fluid enbie for six months is what's causing problems.
