Hello, I’ve been using a separate Twitter account to my main to support petitions /share articles and discuss issues regarding self Id trans women In sport and similar topics as I’ve seen the mob like mentality towards j.k Rowling and others . It makes me feel like I have to share my views anonymously otherwise the threats and harassment starts . I’ve been questioning if this is the right thing to do though .

If you use Twitter to discuss similar is it under your own name or anonymously and why ?
Thanks

My own name. Mixed reasons, including:

  1. Tried using an anonymous account and found it too easy to become angry and impolite, which I felt made me less persuasive rather than more.

  2. I am in a job where being ‘out’ on Twitter is unlikely to affect me (though I have a lesser, secondsry career which is likely to be affected). I feel there is power in using our own names if at all possible, and so I do.

  3. Quite a strong feeling that I refuse to be gaslighted and silenced. Speaking in my own name gives me strength and a feeling of sanity. I don’t want to hide any more.

I use an anonymous account on a burner email address.

I've had abuse on here (via PM) and on Twitter for my views. In addition my role is somewhat public facing and my employer is all about Stonewall so I might lose my job.

GNCQ · 07/04/2021 09:25

I use at least three different accounts for whichever topic is relevant to the account. No use of own names at all.
Having said that, I barely look at it these days other than eg lovely photos of Yorkshire.

I am there under my own name. I too work in an area where my views are unlikely to get me fired. In fact I know that everyone I work closely with shares my views. Not so sure about other areas of the business where there are more younger employees who might be a bit more 'woke'. And my employer correctly uses sex instead of gender in their policies and in house training materials.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 07/04/2021 11:18

I'm on it but stupidly set up years ago and my handle is one I've used for other online accounts. It wouldn't take much to find my real name, go on LinkedIn, find my employer and report me. Not that I think I'd be fired but it's nonsense I could do without in my life. If I create an anonymous account no doubt it would be reported and criticised as a "fake account" from one of the uk transphobic bots that apparently we all are Wink

For now I follow a lot of GC accounts, like their posts and report any twats I find along the way.

MrsMidClegs · 07/04/2021 11:50

Anon for me, but with a view to that at some point I might make it my own name. So am a little like that which another poster upthread has said - I don't be argumentative or rude and stay calm and provide facts, none of which are harmful or phobic. Always keeping in mind that one day my family or colleagues could trawl through my profile.

Mollyollydolly · 07/04/2021 11:54

Post under my own name. I stand by anything I say or I wouldn't say it and I'm not in a job anymore where it matters. Also it keeps things polite. I don't indulge in pointless arguments with randoms any more, it's futile.

SlipperyLizard · 07/04/2021 11:59

I’m anon on Twitter because my name is quite rare, and my Firm thinks women can have penises. I feel like a coward, when so many brave women have risked everything (Maya Forstater, Allison Bailey etc).

Helmetbymidnight · 07/04/2021 12:05

I have my professional account on twitter for work - that I also use to follow feminist accounts but I would only do 'likes', not RT's.

recently set up a feminist account that I use for all women's rights stuff. I'm far more outspoken here - and agree with PP, probably less polite.

(I occasionally muddle up the two and it makes my heart stop.)

YouWerePrettyIWasLonely · 07/04/2021 12:20

I'm anonymous on Twitter as I can't risk my job and families income. Although as a company that has a reputation for being woke most employees do not agree that TWAW etc.

Witchesbelazy · 07/04/2021 20:02

Thanks for the replies
I’m always polite but can see where it’s easy to blur the lines anonymously. I think like previous comments one day I may use my own name but I’m not ready yet

I was on Twitter under my real name. Back when I didn't really use it or understand it. When I started to realise the extent of the misogyny on there, I deleted my account!

I haven’t deleted mine, but have logged out while I think about it.

A transactivist bully insisted over and over that I was ‘c*s’ and when I complained to Twitter that he had misgendered me, they pretended there was no problem.

The misogyny from users is bad enough. The woman-hating staff are more of a problem.

I do same as you - my own, old twitter account in my name, which I barely use and an anonymous one linked to a throwaway email address.

I worried it would damage my career if I posted my GC stance openly - like you, I wish I could come out as GC
