The answers will prove very interesting.

JellySlice · 22/03/2021 17:42

I've always been uncomfortable with the idea of part of our government being an un-elected body. It smacked of privilege and disconnection. The ongoing assault on women's rights has demonstrated the benefits of having a body of law-makers who do not need to worry about popularity, balancing our vote-chasing elected representatives.

Well done, Baroness Noakes!

Igmum · 22/03/2021 17:59

Excellent, excellent, excellent. We need decent, accurate statistics. Well done the brave baroness.

MichelleofzeResistance · 22/03/2021 18:20

Thank goodness!

Now please Baroness, can you ask if preventing fair democratic process on the grounds that some may be too stressed by it is going to be a new standard thing for all? (And if so can we just stop all this on the grounds that removing sex based rights for women is just too stressful for them?)

Or if it's going to be for only one group on grounds of extreme vulnerability can we know please: what is the evidence of this exceptional vulnerability? Does it apply to every member of this group and all situations pertaining to them? Is preventing fair democratic process the best and only and least harmful strategy for protecting them? What formula or proven strategy has led to this approach? (Equality Act reasonable adjustments?) And where is the impact assessment? Where is the corrective action to compensate for the imbalance to ensure fairness of outcome to others in the situation?

And when was this discussed and passed as an acceptable approach by parliament?

Manderleyagain · 22/03/2021 18:22

Really good questions. Just to summarise, she is asking the government
-why was the cabinet office an interested party?
-what did it cost?
-what assessments of ONS conduct have been made?
-what guidence will be issued to make sure public bodies consult a broad range of respondents?

Manderleyagain · 22/03/2021 18:22

Oh and she asks will there be a review of how government bodies use the word sex?

Belleende · 22/03/2021 18:25

Love it. They can't escape a parliamentary question. I can hear Whitehall scrabbling around from here

I think this one is my favourite.

Thanks for the summary Manderley.

There is a campaign now supporting the abolition of the HOL. I am deeply suspicious of this, not least because the calibre of elected politicians currently is absolutely dire.
A dear friend of mine was a life peer. Through him I was lucky to meet some other life peers. These people are intelligent, thoughtful, and have amazing life experience. They are capable of critical and independent thinking We really need them to scrutinise the appalling stuff that comes out of the HOC.
