Stonewall and school spending

Whether or not you have school age children, we will have been aware of school funding been squashed every year.

I had a chat with DD1 about toilet accidents last week after noticing, additional 'mucky' clothes in the wash basket.
She said there was no toilet roll at school. I was at the playground today and two of the mums said their daughters were fibbing about there being no loo roll at school.
I asked DD1, whether they know who to ask for toilet roll. She tells me they are just told to go and have a quick wee at break and lunch-times, there isn't any loo roll and they can wait for anything 'more than a wee' when they get home from school.

Isn't this hideous?
Our local school is a diversity champion. £1,700 to Stonewall's Diversity Champion scheme and no loo roll.
Well and truly captured.

That is appalling - and I'm certain it's a breach of some aspect of Health & Safety rules. It's completely unacceptable and the idea that children should have to go to an adult and ask for toilet roll in advance is unbelievable.
What on earth does this say about the standards od pastoral care if this is how they view children? I never say 'Go to the press' OP, but in this case the school deserves it (once you've triple checked that this is definitely happening).

Definitely bring up the issue of no toilet paper in the toilets with the Head Teacher. And question how they spend school funding

gardenbird48 · 21/03/2021 21:49

Oh my goodness - this is insane!!

A quick calculation reveals that they could pay for 7392 toilet rolls with that Stonewall money (on top of the existing consumables budget obviously). Obviously there will be cheaper sources available to schools but that number would go a long way.

It effectively makes the toilet facilities unavailable and unhygienic for students so has to be unlawful.

The school leadership and governors have a lot to answer for!!

I'm just so disappointed.
This is a basic care need and children can be anxious about going to the loo outside of home (esp. after being at home for so long with various lockdowns).
I'm sending a letter in to head of year tomorrow, ccd to deputy head.
Been a letter-sending mood all week!

Could it be they simply ran out? Another child could have told that story to your daughter. Staff wouldn't realise the girls toilets have run out unless told by a child. Sometimes the cleaners don't fill them. Worth a check.

I wouldn’t jump straight to ‘go to the press’.

I would say go straight to the head. Explain what your daughter has said, and what other girls and their parents have said in the play ground. See what the head says.

It could be that some kids used all the toilet paper to decorate/vandalise the bathroom, the usual cleaner was off and her replacement didn’t know where it was kept, supply chain issues mean that it has been ordered but not delivered, or, yes, they fucked up the budget and ran out of toilet paper before the end of term.

Find out first. Then take action. (If necessary).

It’s totally separate to Stonewall, so I wouldn’t frame it that way. It’s absolutely awful that there is a school without such a basic and necessary supply, but it may be an admin cock up (order not made or not received) or a misunderstanding in the children’s side.

I’d try to get to the bottom of it. If nothing else, it can’t be allowed to continue, and the money must be found somewhere. If the books are being so badly mismanaged the LEA may need to be involved.

I’d say that regardless of which charity they’re supporting, and I think using it being Stonewall as evidence of some kind of anti female bias is a total red herring.

Surely this is a breach of human rights, if true?
