Entire Pride in London advisory board resigns citing 'hostile environment'

Every member of Pride in London’s community advisory board has resigned citing an alleged culture of bullying and a “hostile environment” for people of colour volunteers.

The resignation of the board on Thursday comes after several directors stepped down, including Pride in London’s most senior black volunteer, deepening a race crisis within the organisation behind the UK’s largest Pride march.

The resignation letter calls for new leadership to take the organisation forward and for an independent investigation by the mayor’s office into allegations of marginalisation and bullying.

The community advisory board (CAB), made up of 10 individuals, was established in 2012 to advise the directors on questions of inclusivity and help the body meet its commitment to openness and transparency.

I saw something about them being pissed off at the corporatisation which is definitely fair.

SmokedDuck · 20/03/2021 03:04

I can't really tell what the issue is either. I know some things like corporate elements have been controversial, or police involvement, but wouldn't views over those be varied within both white and non-white communities?

I can't even say that SW is in the wrong here, the information is too vague. I tend to think it's a purity spiral like someone said.

I've just read that article and I'm none the wiser

Quite a lot of it simply makes no sense because it's so badly written. It's full of long, waffly sentences where basic rules of grammar, such as tieing subjects and verbs together and making sure subsidiary parts of sentences connect, have been ignored.

The gist is complaints about transphobia have been taken seriously but complaints about racism have not. But as he gives no specific examples we can't determine if his complaint is justified.

I kept reading the article hoping it would actually get to the point, but .... Nope lol.

St*newall has been denouncing the PIL leadership on Twitter: "We have lost confidence that the leadership has learnt from past mistakes". Like they think they have a veto on who is charge of a separate organisation. I wonder if there is some sort of faction fight going on here.

There's an article in the Guardian (sorry!) where there is a bit more detail. Seems it is about issues such as police having a contingent, but also seems to be that they were just treated in a tokenist way. ie sit there and make us look good, but dont think you can have an opinion and be listened to.

The comments from Tatchell are I think slightly different. ie those who think Pride is now just a social event with everyond in their party clothes. He, and others, want a more political march.

Not that I think any of these will confront the male dominantion and attitudes which effectively erase lesbians as women who are sexually attracted to other women.

This is Pride's statement if anyone is interested. (I haven't read it!) prideinlondon.org/news-and-views/a-statement-from-pride-in-london-on-significant-changes-to-structure-and/
