“When Papworth killed her he was out on police bail after assaulting her a month earlier. By the time of the murder he had breached that bail by contacting Amy and had been back to court to plead guilty to doing so, but was bailed again by magistrates, against the advice of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).”

I honestly don't have the words.

ArabellaScott · 16/03/2021 22:49

I have no words, either.

RIP Amy-Leanne.

I’m shocked (well, not really) at the seeming failure here of police to highlight prior offences and things like the social services report and the results of the MARAC. It’s an absolute disgrace if these weren’t put forward to prosecutors as part of the case, it shows an absolute failure to understand how DV perpetrators operate as there are ALWAYS prior offences in my professional experience. You might have to dig a bit but that’s why the fucking Police National Database exists, so that they can check previous offences (including those which weren’t convicted) and conduct a risk assessment to safeguard the victim. I hope her family find answers Flowers

So many of these red flags are in line with Jane Monckton-Smith's timeline: Domestic abuse: Killers 'follow eight-stage pattern', study says

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49481998

Paper on which the timeline is based:

Terrible terrible story. Poor Amy.

This is heartbreaking

Men don’t and won’t change. And it’s women who are Killed .Awful

TheABC · 17/03/2021 07:17

Its shit and endemic throughout our justice system. If we report, we are not believed. If there's evidence it's denied, minimised or turned back on us. If there's a conviction, its excused or deflected with a low sentence.

I am so angry.

hamstersarse · 17/03/2021 07:24

I confess I barely read these accounts now. I managed to escape similar 11 years ago and know that could have been me, there for the grace of god.

It like a nightmare on repeat. And I find it hard to even raise emotion about it now, I’ve resigned myself to the inevitability. I surmise it’s because of the fundamentals of our laws...you can’t punish someone for an estimation of what they might do, and I sort of understand why we have to maintain that principle.

It leaves me more interested in supported escape routes via refuges.

risefromyourgrave · 17/03/2021 07:28

Fucking hell, what a monster that man was. And while it’s sad for Amy’s family to not see him get convicted, at least he’s dead so he can’t ever be released on ‘good behaviour’ and go on to do this again.

WarriorN · 17/03/2021 07:38

This is horrific.

And the family say that people still think there are two sides to the story???

Jeeze the misogyny is alive in that town.

BadgertheBodger · 17/03/2021 07:46

Hamstersarse sorry you went through that Flowers

I think what really gets to me about these cases is there is inevitably a point where the police could and should have done more. Panic alarms, markers on her address, involving social services so it is made abundantly clear that to remain with the perpetrator will risk the victim’s children being removed. I don’t blame women who return to these creatures, when you’re beaten down and abused it is so difficult to find the courage to leave and stay away when they’re pressuring and scheming and won’t leave you alone. Support from the right places can make all the difference.

The police could and should have made sure the crimes he had committed were taken seriously. It would be interesting to know how much bother they took over preparing the case and making sure it was as watertight as possible. I am a bit surprised that a guilty plea for weapons was sentenced at Magistrates court. Certainly my local force would have pushed for that to be sentenced at Crown. Just yet more evidence of the endemic misogyny in the police. God it makes me rage. Another woman’s life lost because of a man and systems which enable men to repeatedly offend.
