Hi all

Has anyone also received a response today from IPSO stating that:

"IPSO is able to investigate complaints against those publications which are members of the regulatory system. At this time, The Guardian is not a member. As such, we are unfortunately unable to assist you with your concerns."

To be clear this relates to juxtaposition of photos/headlines/narrative - and not criticism of any individuals.

The Guardian is not a member of IPSO?

Bloody hell I've just checked and the Observer isn't on their either.

I'm really shocked about that.

So Pink news, The Guardian and the Observer aren't regulated but the Daily Mail and the Times are.

OhHolyJesus · 15/03/2021 20:35

Yep - they left in 2014

@This follows the closure of the Press Complaints Commission and the launch of the Independent Press Standards Organisation on Monday. Talks are ongoing between GNM and IPSO with a view to the publisher possibly signing up.

The Scott Trust, which owns The Guardian, appoints the readers' editor. It is also to appoint to two further “independent” figures to work alongside external ombudsman John Willis."

The Guardian have an internal ombudsman, doesn't sound very independent but ok...of the 16 areas I can see a few that relate to that front cover you mention OP.

Where there are asterisks above, the Editorial Code recognises that complaints should be weighed against a judgment as to whether the story is in the public interest.

Private Eye also aren’t members as a point of principle. There are apparently very good journalistic reasons not to be members (though I can’t remember what they are!), but if you aren’t then you are liable for your opponents costs in court even if you win (or something like that).

Leafdelta · 15/03/2021 20:44

@OhHolyJesus - I admit I was gobsmacked too (though that is my ignorance in these matters - just assumed most "leading news organisations" would be signed up) Now the only recourse that IPSO could offer (and I know it is not their fault) was to send a reader's letter.

Thanks @PaleBlueMoonlight - would explain reluctance to be members

I'm shocked !
But then again not surprised . . .
