RE/RSE - Jigsaw PSHE

Wished to follow up this.

Lots of useful information: www.google.com/search?q=%22jigsaw+pshe%22+site%3Amumsnet.com

Has anyone had any luck with accessing and reviewing the Jigsaw material.

The comments are concerning.

Lesson plans can appear to be okay but the devil is in the detail as one poster said.

Can anyone share Baroness Nicholson's letter which refers to Jigsaw.

OP posts:

I don't think Jigsaw is as bad as many out there.

FindTheTruth · 13/03/2021 18:02

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 13/03/2021 18:04

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 13/03/2021 18:11

So what’s the issue?

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 15/03/2021 20:02
Some links that might be of interest when considering this scheme if your school intends to use this material:

www.jigsawpshe.com/primary-pshe-scheme-of-work-including-statutory-relationships-and-health-education/

www.jigsawpshe.com/request-an-inspection-of-jigsaw-3-11/

www.jigsawpshe.com/jigsaw-pshe-fulfils-statutory-requirements-for-relationships-rse-and-health-education/

 • the above link would suggest that the material may not be or is unlikely to be compliant with the September 2020 guidance from the DFE (as the update is from May 2020) (the website does suggest that they keep material updated)

Scrolling down on this page www.jigsawpshe.com/primary-pshe-scheme-of-work-including-statutory-relationships-and-health-education/ to key points gives you the information in the previous post.

Jigsaw’s Units of Work (Puzzles) are:

 1. Being Me in My World

Includes understanding my place in the class, school and global community as well as devising Learning Charters.

 1. Celebrating Difference

Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and diversity work.

 1. Dreams and Goals

Includes goal-setting, aspirations for yourself and the world and working together.

 1. Healthy Me

Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices.

 1. Relationships

Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills.

 1. Changing Me

This puzzle includes sex and relationships education in the context of coping positively with change. (includes age-appropriate sex education) [material in this section could be concerning to some parents]

NB it is not a legal requirement to teach sex education at primary school and if your school intends to do it and if you wish to you can withdraw your child from sex education regardless of how it is described.

Scrolling down this same page also gives you the pricing.

Jigsaw digital resources are supplied as HTML Web pages, Microsoft PowerPoint (pptx), Microsoft Word (docx) and Adobe (pdf) formats.

So absolutely no good reason the school could not provide them to parents.

Articles relating to primary school material: www.jigsawpshe.com/jigsaw-articles-3-11/
It covers the statutory content via regular updates. Like any scheme, it needs to be adapted to meet the needs of school and class context.

@RandomDent

So what’s the issue?
This. There's a lot of information but I'm still none the wiser as to what the perceived problem is.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend any off the shelf scheme for PSHE. However, given the squeeze on curriculum time and the fact that often PSHE is shoved in at the last minute and taught by staff who happen to have a bit of unallocated time, it works as a starting point.

I am a long time lurker and have recently started becoming more 'active' in feminism. I have been in contact with my daughter's secondary school about the RSE resources/lessons, she is due to start there in September. They used Jigsaw last year but it looks like they are planning their own resources this year.
Thank you to everyone on the thread and other threads that have helped me to articulate an email which I am waiting for a response to. I used information from the new DoE guidance about external agencies and also some sentences from a template letter on safe schools alliance. I am hoping they might take it into consideration when finalising their lessons. For some reason though I feel a bit doubtful of myself, and that on receipt of my email I might be known as that parent already, so am feeling a bit shaky!

RandomDent · 24/03/2021 13:48

@bigcheesematrix what is wrong with Jigsaw? I’d love to know but can’t work it out.

bigcheesematrix · 24/03/2021 14:15

Safe school alliance suggests problems with encouraging discussions to be kept secret from parents and also the implication of your outward appearance indicating your gender and therefore reinforcing sex stereotypes.

The email I sent isn't to discuss the use of Jigsaw, as I said in my post it doesn't look like it's being used in the planning for the next academic year. I have been asking about how they will teach gender identity, how they will ensure that they are not reinforcing stereotypes and for teaching not to conflict with the teaching of scientific reproductive biology and anatomy.

RandomDent · 24/03/2021 14:38

Thank you - this is the first time anyone has pinned down what may be the issue!
