Women face double the risk of concussion in sport

Not surprising to hear than women aren't the same as men, or that there's not enough research taking place on the effects on women because the focus is too often on men.

There has been a lot in the news recently about the long term impact on the brains of male footballers and rugby players, so it's concerning that women face a much bigger risk.

There's been studies I think that show men have thicker stronger skulls than women.

Or to put it another way. Women have 'eggshell skulls' which are surprisingly easy to break.

Women have double the risk of concussion when playing against other women.

Yes. Not surprisingly, The Guardian is ignoring the elephant in women's sport.

Hi Doyoumind

I nearly missed this thread. you might also be interested in this

Sean Ingle from the Guardian has a good record for supporting women's sports. There'll be a reason he has not mentioned the higher risk of transwomen playing. I expect though that he will include these quotes about the concussion risk when an appropriate moment presents itself.

But, it is something that I don't see discussed often for some reason. Obviously, we draw the conclusion quite readily here on FWR as it seems just that... obvious.

Women's sport gets less coverage. Some women's sport has only been played at a professional or elite level for a few years. Even if there were no transgendered women in women's competitive sport, there would still be much less evidence about the risks of concussion and any long term impacts.

I find it very interesting that, at least in the UK, which is where I live and so know about.

Women's sport in recent years has started to be covered more, the women getting more sponsorship and more well known

In workplaces women are in a better position than they've even been and with lots of stuff about companies wanting more women in leadership positions etc

Other stuff as well probably

A huge amount of fighting and work has gone on to get us to a position where things were starting to look better and BOOM suddenly it's turned into an open category...
