Womb Transplants

I’ve noticed an increase online in the discussion of the possibility of womb transplants for trans women, to allow them to be pregnant and give birth to children.

This is increasingly presented as something in the very near future, largely because of the success of womb transplants into women.

Is this at all realistic? Presumably the mechanics are slightly more complicated than ‘just’ needing a womb transplant, and will this become an ethical debate?

I can’t quite wrap my head around it - mainly because I’d never considered it achievable.

@YawningAngel

I've only skimmed the thread, so apologies if this was mentioned already, but can you imagine the rage of a TW who ends up in court for fetal homicide? (not a charge in the UK to my knowledge, but this kind of thing does happen) Considering that biological women get these kinds of charges for miscarriages which are, sadly, a natural event, the chances that a TW would lose a pregnancy would be astronomically higher since their fundamental biology isn't adapted for it.

Imagine if TW were being taken to court for drinking while pregnant. If missing an oestrogen shot was treated as an act of manslaughter. If it comes to pass, there's an evil part of me waiting to enjoy the outrage of one of these stunning and brave misogynists, for finding themselves being treated like actual women.

It would never happen, because they aren't actually women by sex.

Utterly true, but they insist that they are.

In the event that it were to happen, what you have to wonder is would they suddenly become biological essentialists? I think they absolutely would.

Wow. Previous thought got policed really fast.

NiceGerbil · 02/07/2021 22:16

Yawning you're jumping the gun rather!

El Salvador women have been sent to prison for life for miscarrying.
USA women have gone to prison for foetal homicide for eg attempting suicide with an overdose while pregnant.

This specific type of oppression of women is not universal.

In those countries/ states where this applies I don't think transwomen (or gay men etc) are particularly accepted tbh.

I assume a transwoman in a state like that would move if they wanted to get pregnant.

In el Salvador my guess is that it would be incredibly dangerous so either wouldn't happen, or they would seek refuge in another country to be pregnant and have s child.

However your hypothetical is pointless because this is sci fi stuff. Not going to happen. If it does it's s very very very long way off.

Also the point of the laws about this type of thing is misogyny. They are to control women. I suspect in the unlikely event that s country that has laws like this is in favour of transwomen being pregnant, they would not be subject to the same oppression.

Sorry I wasn't policing you, I just disagree that the axe would fall as heavily as it would on a women by sex.
NiceGerbil · 02/07/2021 22:20

My other question with all this is why just transwomen?

The are men who would like to carry a baby. Eg those who want more children but their female partner doesn't want another pregnancy.

What of them?

I'm sure some gay couples would take this option as well.

Why just transwomen?

NiceGerbil · 02/07/2021 22:23

The other point here is that plenty of pregnant women and or their foetuses.

Are harmed by men's actions- violence etc. I don't see many prosecutions but maybe they aren't reported (optimistic).

And it's now known that older fathers are a risk for various issues with the baby. Oh and a higher chance of miscarriage. Do they go to prison in el Salvador? (Rhetorical!)

They won't though will they.

They still get treated as male (except the small number who genuinely pass in every way in real life).

So there's no chance of that happening.

YawningAngel · 02/07/2021 22:39

I agree with you completely. But won't that reveal all the excuses for policing women as the tissue thin BS that they are?

There's only so far you can push the boundaries before something snaps in one direction or the other.

NiceGerbil · 02/07/2021 22:41

You are an optimist!

No because they don't really see women as people. They don't care how we suffer by their rules.

Sorry.

Pregnancy affects a while lot more than a uterus alone. I don't think anyone could get ethics approval to trial womb transplants. Thankfully.

It feels a whole lot more scientifically likely that we'll figure out brain transplants, so someone born male who wants to carry a baby would just use a whole women's body.

Well that's surrogacy isn't it? Without the brain transplant hassle.

intriguing.

where will the womb fit in a male pelvis. will the male pelvis be able to accomodate a growing womb/foetus?
what about stretching ligaments holding the pelvis together?
what about increased blood volume?
what about stretching skin, will that stretch in the same way? (more likely to get stretch marks?
what about the muscles in the tummy,, will they split in the middle in men more than in women?
will ribs be able to move outwards in men?
what about the bladder?
will the spine be able to bend as in women?
teeth and calcium as mentioned above
immune response as mentioned.

so many things to solve in addition to transfer of the womb.
