The misogynist incel movement is spreading. Should it be classified as a terror threat?

I found the article a bit muddled but thought it interesting that the Guardian would publish it given its topic. ie about men who hate women.

Interesting.

Couple of other points.

Plenty of men who believe this stuff will be terrorising women at an individual level. DV, rape, all stuff which is not big news but is endemic. And under reported. How do you tell the difference between a man who drugs and rapes women because he's a nasty piece of work, and one who does it because he's a nasty piece of work who subscribes to this ideology?

Same with men who kill women and girls.

A fair few religious terrorists turn out to have a history of DV /VAWG / rape of women. Should these crimes be taken more seriously?

I think the nature of how this ideology is enacted in practice is complicated. How can we know how many crimes are linked to it?

But yes if a man goes out and kills a load of women and says this is why then of course it's terrorism.

That's really a central point. The link to domestic violence. Or rather domestic violence is another example of the Incel mentality.

Angry celibate men may express it out loud. But many men just exhibit it.

For women terrorism is in the home. Sad

Well and in a range of severity in loads of other situations.

The problem is that it's all seen as a normal risk of being female.

It's also usual to see it as the victim's fault and that it's up to her to protect herself.

Why did you marry him
Why don't you leave
Why did you walk home that way
Why did you go home with him
He was probably just being friendly etc

And we have a list of stuff which is supported by society. Don't walk here. Don't go out by yourself. Don't accept a drink. Don't wear these sorts of clothes.. Don't provoke him etc

Essentially the threat hangs over the lives of women and girls globally.

Many feminists have described it as terrorism.. They are seen as ridiculous.

But what else is it?

Misogyny should be seen as the threat it is. Not just the incel movement, the whole attitude of hatred towards women. This is a step in the right direction but there is a very very long way to go. DV, sex games gone wrong and so on and so forth - these are men who would be incels but are in relationships. The hatred needs to be recognised for what it is.

Totally. I think “men who hate women” should be required reading for everyone.
