Hang on, are you saying that mums net deleted the thread because mums net is racist? And because you were trying to support a charity which helped people of colour, they deleted the thread? I hope they come on this thread to answer it.

No, the TRA poster compared black women to transwomen.
risefromyourgrave · 05/03/2021 08:27

Should clarify, the TRA was the OP.

WarriorN · 05/03/2021 08:41

What a great charity, thank you!

FlibbertyGiblets · 05/03/2021 09:14

Thank you.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/03/2021 09:20

Thanks for the clarification on the thread zapping, I missed it.

PurpleHoodie · 05/03/2021 09:59

We can start putting other charity information on this thread (and then I'll report it for MNHQ) or I could may a request in site stuff for a dedicated pinned thread and we can copy the info. over to there.

Am busy until later, but feel free to add charity/good causes here for now.

Thanks everyone.

With my paranoid hat on, Purple, I sometimes feel reluctant to share, esp with the smaller charities, in case of pylons from those who watch us closely (selects words carefully).

PurpleHoodie · 05/03/2021 10:46

Understandable Fibberty.

We are not dealing with sane people. No matter what women like Hibo have to say, it will never be enough for the hateful racist, sexist bigots.

They will push. And we have to help these women (and men) running these charities push back harder. Every little £5 helps. Every little cup/badge/tote bag/t shirt.

The lurkers thread 'Courage calls to courage' shows many people want to help Flowers

I worry about this kind of thing, too, Flibberty. But if we don't mention them, they don't get the donations they need. The other week, someone started a thread about seeing someone with a StandingForWomen bag and the thread caused such a measureable spike in sales, that Posie Parker went searching on MN and t'interwebs to see who'd been promoting her organisation! I'd like to think KN are experiencing a similar spike in donations right now. (Did you know you can donate a fiver just by sending a text.)

The other thing is, that the organisations we're talking about probably aren't being allowed to do their work unimpeded. Stepping in to protect young people from forced marriage must surely be highly unpopular with the people responsible, and they need us to help them push back against them!

Anyway, I made a thread.

FlibbertyGiblets · 05/03/2021 21:32

PotholeParadies yup yup I get what you are saying.

Flamglimglubberty · 05/03/2021 21:37

Thank you for sharing OP, I'd never heard of this charity and the amazing work they do

PurpleHoodie · 06/03/2021 09:11

How great that they accept easy text and cheque donations.

Karma Nirvana is a great organization, I'm so happy to see it highlighted!

WarOnWomen · 06/03/2021 10:11

Thank you for highlighting this charity as I had never heard of it.

I'm feeling very emotional this morning, with all the positive pushback after the past few days.

Pottedcat · 06/03/2021 10:22

I read the other thread about how women are being killed by taliban. I was so angry and felt so helpless. Thank you Op. At Ieast I can do something to help women in trouble near me.

PurpleHoodie · 06/03/2021 11:56

I hadn't heard of this charity before and followed the link to find out more.

They clearly do great work but this phrase leapt out at me:

'Honour crimes are not determined by age, faith, gender or sexuality...'

Can someone who knows them better tell me, do they not recognise the biological reality of sex and that a very large majority of people affected are girls and young women of the biological kind?

PurpleHoodie · 06/03/2021 12:26

My

This charity was firstly borne out of very specific ethnic minority groups. It was around when I was younger. Young men in Asian (and other) communities were also pushed into forced marriages.

They understand female and male. No doubt.

"Honour crimes" affect all types. More so than some, so it is good that Karma Nirvana have expanded who their service is for.

"Closed off" communities are deeply affected.

Certain Asian specific communities.

Some parts of ethnic minority
communities such as Travellers.

Members of closed off Religious communities (i.e. girls/boys belonging to fundamentalist Christian sects in the UK).

The victims wil be female or male. Any ethnicity. Religious or not.

Etc etc.

For that reasoning - it seems obvious we should support them with time, money and energy.

PotholeParadies · 06/03/2021 13:07

I an absolutely certain they know. It's a tiny charity, its founder who escaped forced marriage is still involved, and they're in the frontlines of fighting against the reality of patriarchal culture. No time for mission creep there

It's either gender as in the polite way to say sex, or they're giving a nod to young women and young men who are facing forced marriage and struggling with gender identity too. Either is fine with me.

PurpleHoodie · 06/03/2021 13:20

Absolutely Pothole.

Absolutely.
