Clue, the period app...

There are weird goings on at Clue...

A few days ago, I got a notification on the app to say they would no longer show the fertile window on the cycle diagram, and if I wanted to opt in to an estimated ovulation day, I had to accept a disclaimer that I couldn’t use the app as contraception Confused

Today, I’ve had an email titled ‘ Providing visibility to the trans community’ and saying ‘ We do this at Clue by saying “people who menstruate” or “people with periods” instead of making it into a gender thing.’

This is a company that a few months ago was appealing for women to pay for the premium version of the app that was created ‘by women for women’ and extolling the virtues of being a female backed organisation of scientists.

What has happened..?! I can’t see any details of a sale...

Clue has been approved for birth control in the US.

That is likely why they have put up the disclaimer.
Clue’s original business model was good. The Garmin tracker does the job.

Tidypidy · 05/03/2021 21:03

The tracker on Fitbit is easy to use and I find it quite accurate.

NiceGerbil · 05/03/2021 21:17

They need to get a clue.

Hahaha.

Sorry I'll get my coat.

Flamglimglubberty · 05/03/2021 21:23

Lord not another one. Honestly what is wrong with women, transmen & NB? This is the only truly inclusive way of phrasing it without erasing the preferred wording of largest period having group.

Why is it when it comes to transpeople it's literal violence and removing their rights when we don't use their preferred labels, but when it comes to women it's absolutely fine to ignore their wants and needs?

RoseAndRose · 05/03/2021 21:27

@SausagePourHomme

"But some trans men also require period services. Including them doesn't somehow erase you"

The word women IS being erased.

On the free version of Clue, there are no references to people at all, because there is very little text. (Though it does say it is created by an all female team and will never sell data or host ads)

I assume that it is only the paid content which people are concerned about?

It's a good tracker - you could just deny them revenue by not using the paid version

Summerhillsquare · 05/03/2021 21:29

Interesting. They haven't referred to me in those terms yet. I saw the removal of the fertile window and assumed they'd been sued by someone. I don't use that, I try and track my PMS symptoms to get the coping strategies in place at the right time. I wonder what else I can use for that?

TaraR2020 · 05/03/2021 21:34

I've not noticed this, I dont subscribe to Clue Plus but haven't seen anything about the changing of terms.

I've found one reference to "women and people with cycles".

NiceGerbil · 05/03/2021 21:37

I looked at the website and it has a bit that says

'Learn about your body and women’s health
Steph from Clue welcomes you to read the newsletter
Hi, I am Steph! I’ll send you both educational and entertaining stories about women’s health and share tips and tricks to get the most out of your Clue app!'

So have they missed a bit?

NiceGerbil · 05/03/2021 21:39

'Honestly what is wrong with women, transmen & NB?'

Because it's not about transmen or non binary females.

It's about decoupling the words female, woman, girl from our biology so as not to upset male transpeople.

Sorry, my post wasn't clear. I'm enraged at the wording "people who menstruate" as I agree that's decoupling our sex based words from our biology. I 100% agree we should not be pandering to such nonsense.

My point was that if inclusive language must be used at all, why can't it be "women, transmen & NB females" as these are the people who menstruate. The common denominator being that they are female, so one could even stretch that the wording should in fact be "females" but I imagine this wouldn't be acceptable in certain circles as it would remind transwomen they are not part of this group based on their biology.

Thislittlefinger123 · 05/03/2021 21:55

I uninstalled their app after the jkr shitshow. If they'd rather pander to a woke minority than their majority target audience then good luck to them. I only used the free version but I still don't want to support or be associate with any company participating in the erasure of women.

NiceGerbil · 06/03/2021 00:40

Oh sorry flam I thought this was a different thread!

You must have thought, eh?

Yes for things like this woman, transmen and non binary people who menstruate or similar would be fine.

The reason it doesn't happen is because the women part, on a menstrual app, excludes transwomen. That's why it's not used. Nothing to do with trans men etc.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 06/03/2021 00:58

I uninstalled it years ago and lost several years of data which would have been useful for my perimenopause years.

It's owned by a man. Once I realised that and they started with the whole"female is offensive" I thought "fair enough, fuck off"

ChakaDakotaRegina · 06/03/2021 01:15

I find it hard to believe there isn’t a technical way to personalise an app around this. If we look at satnavs you can have any combination of language and voice. If some people want to be referred to as something different it can’t be that hard to pick from a list in settings and have that link through at certain points.

JingleCatJingle · 06/03/2021 10:43

Clue, the initial start up, was founded by a woman called Ida Tin (she is Danish). It’s since been bought over by men. I agree with the previous poster. Why not just allow people to tailor the communications and pronouns. Not a big deal. You could even have transwomen using the app to track their reactions to HRT. Everyone wins.
I use Garmin though which has no obvious agenda.

Here's the Clue JKR shitstorm

FrickinA · 08/03/2021 19:26

It’s a great app and I don’t give a stuff if they decide to included transmen, and non-binary people in their marketing alongside women. Some trans men have periods and do not want to be referred to as women.
As women’s

PineappleCakes · 08/03/2021 21:18

@bellinisurge

Suggestions for other apps, please
I use WomanLog, they have a free and a paid version. I've not noticed any non-women language. Yet 🤞.
