I know the Daily Mail gets a bad rap but the level of underpayment their Money section investigation found is mind blowing www.dailymail.co.uk/money/pensions/article-9321797/Elderly-women-owed-stunning-3BILLION-state-pension-DWP.html

Wow that is absolutely scandalous Shock

MediocreOne · 03/03/2021 18:33

Shocking. My mum was underpaid by £20,000, only found out about a year ago, she had no idea

Thelnebriati · 03/03/2021 18:35

If you can't see the link, the underpayment is £3 billion.

''The DWP encourages anyone who thinks they have failed to claim a state pension increase they are eligible for to contact the department.
It says 'interest and consolatory payments' will be considered on a case-by-case basis and depend on individual circumstances.''

persistentwoman · 03/03/2021 18:37

This is outrageous. How on earth have they managed to shortchange so many women?

Women are taken less seriously, it was readers letters to the Mail Money that caused this to be investigated. I’m quite sure those readers (and other women) would have tried official routes first as thats how the Money letters work they look into problems when official routes have not resolved the problem.

Fundamentally this is just another piece of evidence that women are treated as second class citizens and they have to fight for their rights to get anywhere

Why should people have had to claim? Is it beyond the DWP to interrogate their databases?

(Rhetorical question, obviously.)

PurpleHoodie · 03/03/2021 19:11

Bumping as high as Everest.

PurpleHoodie · 03/03/2021 19:26

Would there be any other financial institutions that have similarly short changed women?

MaudTheInvincible · 03/03/2021 19:36

Ffs! Women get it in the neck at every turn. Pleased this has been discovered now, for those who have been affected.

OvaHere · 03/03/2021 19:46

This is awful. So many women, many whom will no longer be alive, will have suffered a reduced standard of living because of this.

Utter incompetency and it always seems directed at women.

PurpleHoodie · 03/03/2021 19:49

Always Ova.

Thelnebriati · 04/03/2021 20:28

Quick bump for the evening crowd.
If you know anyone who may be affected, they need to claim.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 05/03/2021 07:25

Awful. All these that died in poverty already. And A lump sum could invalidate housing benefits.

sonnysunshine · 05/03/2021 07:29

Do you need to claim or if it going to be automatically refunded? My DM is likely to be affected but hard to help her over the phone at the moment.

PurpleHoodie · 05/03/2021 07:32

I think a quick call to your mums tax office will give you the answer sonny.

They're normally quite good.

TartrazineCustard · 05/03/2021 11:32

Yes, this is part of the systemic disadvantage women face. I suspect this is an aspect no-one is trying to appropriate, though.
