Does anyone have a share token.

Activists have won the fight. Abusers who throttle their partners will face five years in jail after ministers bowed to campaigners to include it in the government’s Domestic Abuse Bill.

It will make non-fatal strangulation and suffocation a criminal offence amid concerns that many perpetrators receive lenient sentences because they are charged only with common assault.

That's great news!

HermitsLife · 01/03/2021 09:46

Great news

AnExcellentWalker · 01/03/2021 09:49

That's fantastic news. It should be counted as equivalent to attempted murder.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 01/03/2021 09:51

The harms of this have taken a long time to be recognised. I sometimes wonder how many brain injuries are missed because nobody asked about non-fatal s/s even in the known context of DV.

peak2021 · 01/03/2021 11:05

Excellent news.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/03/2021 11:14

Good. There look to be some other important points in the bill including this:

Laws governing controlling or coercive behaviour will be strengthened to no longer make it a requirement for abusers and victims to live together. A government review found that people who left abusive partners could often be subjected to sustained or increased controlling or coercive behaviour after separation.

sashagabadon · 01/03/2021 11:15

Great news. Well done to the campaigners Smile

Thanks Errol, agree that is very important. Most women are killed either when they say they will leave or after they have left.

Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
Well done to the campaigners.

PopperUppleton · 01/03/2021 11:46

I see the northern chappie is pissed off that this crime is seen as gender specific (of course, they don't mean gender, they mean sex) completely dismissing the stats that say both men and women suffer from throttling, but more than ten times as many women as men are killed by it.

Imnobody4 · 01/03/2021 11:55

It also makes threatening to share intimate images a criminal offence. Think we have the HoLs to thank for these changes.

MichelleofzeResistance · 01/03/2021 12:03

Thank you for the share token. Good news.

Although silent growl at the 'gender specific crime' wording. No, it's not gender specific. This is not a crime risked only people who choose to have long hair and giggle, that you can keep yourself safe from by having short hair and reading maps correctly. Stranglers generally give not one fuck in the heat of the moment about their victim's sense of self and identity and personal expression.

It's sex specific. Having female biology is what creates the risk. Nothing else.

MichelleofzeResistance · 01/03/2021 12:07

And the comments..... argh.

Men get throttled tooooooooo.

Where? Where are the statistics? How many women in the past 12 months have been in court for fatally strangling either a male or female partner? How many men for fatally strangling a male partner?

How many women have ever been imprisoned for fatally strangling a male partner with their hands during sex/by accident/because they lost it/because he was trying to leave?

Sex. It's SEX specific. Because the size and the relative strength. Men with hurt feelings about this really need to get over themselves.

MichelleofzeResistance · 01/03/2021 12:08
  • and for HQ and the eyes in the sky: the comments referred to are people who are identifying themselves both as male and wishing to name themselves as men.
ErrolTheDragon · 01/03/2021 12:11

What the hell is their problem? While it's clear the crime is committed vastly more on women than men, surely the law will apply equally to all sexes not just protect women anyway? Confused

MichelleofzeResistance · 01/03/2021 12:18

Fascinating isn't it? The absolute inability to cope with anything that is labelled as specific to or for women without feeling threatened and hard done by.

highame · 01/03/2021 12:23

Have the TRA's got wind of the fact that commenting is a good thing, because if there are enough of them, they can drown us out. We need a concerted effort to comment where we can

They've got it arse about face. I'm sure the law will protect all victims of throttling equally, as it should. The reason why the seriousness of the crime wasn't already recognised is because such a large proportion of it occurs in the context of escalating violence on women by their male partners.

TartrazineCustard · 01/03/2021 17:32

Fantastic to see this action being taken! Well done the campaigners.

ImaginaryCat · 01/03/2021 17:39

I can only imagine the pathetic moans in corners of the internet about kink shaming. "If I get my jollies watching my partner's face turn blue, then you're discriminating against poor little me by stopping me. My rights. Me, me, me!"

HermitsLife · 01/03/2021 18:41

Nice to see our Mancunian friend on there airing out his solitary brain cell

manatsu · 01/03/2021 23:21

Good. Now let's stop promoting "choking" to young women and girls as a fun sexy thing to let your boyfriend do to you (I know, I know, it needs to get out of mainstream porn first)

manatsu · 01/03/2021 23:23

Although disclosing private sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress became an offence in 2015, under the new rules those who even threaten to share such material could face two years in prison.

Also good news!

OvaHere · 01/03/2021 23:55

Great news. Incredible that people are complaining in the comments section. So pleased this campaign has been successful, they've done a great job.
