Labour Party 'uninvite' Kiri Tunks to speak about sexism in ed

The misogyny in the Labour Party appears to be reaching epidemic proportions. One of the Labour Women's Declaration founder signatories, former NEU President, co-founder of WPUK, and lifelong activist for women's rights, has been 'un-invited' by the Party to give a talk on sexism in education. This is shocking and chilling in equal measure.

Wonder if we might hazard a guess as to why the invitation has been withdrawn? Anything to do with knowing the biological difference between males and females perhaps? It would seem so.

Kiri was uninvited on the basis that her speaking 'would "upset" people and that the ward has a "duty of care" towards its members'. So a duty of care means ensuring that members are protected 'from women speaking about oppression, misogyny and discrimination'.

The Labour Party should be utterly ashamed.

As Women Uniting have just tweeted:

@kiritunks record as a tireless campaigner for working people and equality speaks for itself.
This is appalling behaviour by @UKLabour and a vile slur against
@WomansPlaceUK
We are horrified and stand in solidarity
@Keir_Starmer when will you show some solidarity with women?

Whatever our politics, here at ConservativesForWomen, we stand with all women who are being no-platformed and subjected to slurs, with no evidence whatsoever, purely because they wish to retain their rights and retain the right to speak about them.

I thought the narrative on the left this week following the headlines about academia was that it's an imagined problem?

How will they spin this then?

Kit19 · 19/02/2021 17:44

Labours female membership has dropped to 44% - not really a surprise is it with this kind of ridiculousness going on

The biggest problem with women talking about women is that apparently its just too distressing for everyone else that those women aren't talking about them.

God forbid women should have a voice they aren't using for the benefit of everyone else at all times.

Olderstyle1 · 19/02/2021 17:53

The combination of stupidity, craven cowardice, sexism and general contempt for women, women's rights and free speech that this reveals is off the scale.

Kiri is an inspiring and dedicated campaigner for workers' rights as well as for women's rights. She stands head and shoulders above those seeking to silence her. I'm incandescent with rage about this.

I might need to steal this. Hits it right on the head.

ValancyRedfern · 19/02/2021 18:03

Fml. I absolutely love Kiri. She was a fantastic Nut president. She supported my school so well when we were on strike. She is a woman of such integrity and human decency. I am actually crying right now. I can't cope with the constant onslaught on good women.

persistentwoman · 19/02/2021 18:03

Yet they'll be creeping round expecting women to vote for them Hmm.

Olderstyle1 · 19/02/2021 18:09

It's not just women's votes they will be after though is it? They'll also be expecting women to continue to campaign for them, knock on doors, deliver leaflets (and make the tea / take the minutes no doubt).

I remember when they came for Linda Bellos - another inspirational figure on the left - and I thought that the LP would support her. Tumbleweed. If women of the stature of Linda an Kiri can be deplatformed on a no-marks' whim then we are in serious trouble.

What can we do? Other than rant on MN that is?

If Labour hadn’t already proved themselves incapable of dealing with women, and lost us, this is just icing on the cow pat as someone put it on another thread the other day. Why on earth don’t they want someone so capable ? Their loss.

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 19/02/2021 18:16

Presume this is for the obvious reason, in which case my party no longer speaks for me anymore. But as a member of the Labour Party nearly a decade, what to do? The alternatives are no more palatable to me.

stumbledin · 19/02/2021 18:23

Unfortunately no longer surprised to hear this about the Labour Party.

Would have thought it more useful to publish the name of the local party so that women who are in the area can let them know how they feel.

Dont forget twitter is only used by a tiny number of people, letters to the local party and newspapers would be more effective.

Otherwise to easy to brush off as the usual suspects.

Dalyesque · 19/02/2021 18:46

Can we take a guess. Leeds NW?

ValancyRedfern · 19/02/2021 19:26

It could be any ward to be honest. Most have been captured.

Shedbuilder · 19/02/2021 19:31

Don't vote Labour in the May elections. Just don't vote. I never thought I'd say that, but it's the only way of delivering the message direct to the party.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 19/02/2021 19:43

“would upset people”. Fucking DARVO.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/02/2021 19:53

Did they not realise, or did they not care, or do they see it as a bonus that disinviting Kiri would upset a lot of people, inc members, too?
But maybe only the wrong sort of women.Hmm

Chicchicchicchiclana · 19/02/2021 19:58

Blood is absolutely boiling over in rage at this.

It should be the first item of news on the National news today!

Most people in the country haven't got a CLUE what is going on and are just bothered about choosing Boris or Keir at the next GE.

Fucks Sake!!!!!

Olderstyle1 · 19/02/2021 20:29

That's what boggles my brain the most Errol. Politically speaking it's so inept. I'm sure they get away with suspending random CLP members all the time (especially the non-males) but surely they must see that the optics on this one are horrendous. It's like a death cult.

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 19/02/2021 20:32

I am loathe to cancel my membership as is still rather Labour in power than any other party, however, they are not listening on this. At all. And I’m so fed up.

Impatiens · 19/02/2021 21:20

I won't vote Labour while they treat Women in this way. Which means I won't vote, for the first time in my life.

teawamutu · 19/02/2021 21:34

There's an ongoing thread about BBC bias. Do we have an equivalent about the shitty misogyny of Labour?

If not, worth starting one?

Olderstyle1 · 19/02/2021 22:11

To be fair we probably need to make it an all-party effort @teawamutu. We could do with an overview of the rampant woman-hating, belittling, abusing and silencing.

It might also be interesting to note those politicians and councillors who reveal their contempt for women by sexting, abusing, asaulting or raping them. Or voting down / filibustering out bills that will protect women and girls.

Or maybe I'll just go and stick pins up my nose. That would probably be more fun.

Galvantulang · 19/02/2021 22:46

I'm rather uncomfortably a sort of Labour Member. I started paying the extra bit of Union subs again (the GMB is so unbelievably fucked too mind you) in horror at the possibility of Nandy or whoever becoming leader.

Starmer at least appears half intelligent, but must have so many splinters in his arse from sitting in the fence saying fuck all.

Who the hell I'd vote for now I don't know. :(
