Over the past year, reports of domestic violence have risen enormously – while refuge places are scarce. One woman explains what it is like trying to help those who have fled for their lives

So important to show all the work happening in the background.

A very good article. Thank you for posting it.

Excellent article. I was horrified by the stat saying that police get a DV call every 30 seconds. That's just terrifying.

We're doing a challenge in work to run/walk/cycle for Women's Aid, I've just sent this to the organiser and hopefully if it's included in one of the reminder emails it will prompt more people to join in.

In progressive Brighton, they have cut the 5 million budget for RISE. Meaning there will be nowhere for women to go to in that area, or as it appears to be reported that they will be managed by generic housing services.

A sobering read. I’m not sure how I feel about the use of abuser/perpetrator/family member when they’re clearly all men. Why can’t they say that?

ChakaDakotaRegina · 17/02/2021 10:52

God that’s a hard read. The numbers are astonishing. And yet the funding is being cut.

This has made me cry reading this. It is such a well written article and has kept the focus on male violence against women whilst still acknowledging that other people experience abuse.

I feel really lucky that I was able to access abuse services because I really needed this. The stories of the other women are so sad.

It is horrifying that the number of deaths as a result of domestic abuse has tripled over lockdown. It has got so little publicity and awareness.

Brighton Council should be deeply ashamed of themselves for defunding Rise. I dread to think of what support is available from the non specialist service. SadThey also have a specialist LGBT service which is needed in that area.

This part is very important:

Tucker O’Sullivan hopes the domestic abuse bill, which is about to pass into law, will improve matters by making it a legal duty for English local authorities to house victims and their children.

There is hope.

Agree that the journalist has done an excellent job on this piece.

Just set up a monthly donation for IDAS (refuge in NW) - the article is a harrowing read.
